Jim, as others have advised, the PSK programs require a 16-bit
sound card. Rather than bother with a used card, just go down
to your local computer dealer and tell him you want the cheapest
16-bit sound card he has. It shouldn't cost you much more than
$20. It will have a 90% chance of working for you just fine.

Subject: [psk31] IC706 interface

Folks:

A 15 minute success story:

My soundcard--radio interface uses the radio shack mini xfmrs & pots, in a
1"x2"x3" plastic box. The appropriate 1/8" cables come out of the box, to
connect to the main station ICOM, which is an old ic781. It uses the Heil
microphone interface cable...
which has a 1/8" tip-sleeve mic input jack. I use vox, and the line-level
audio output from the radio.

For the 706, I also use the Heil mic. I/F cable, and take RX audio from the
remote speaker jack. This mutes the
internal speaker. So I added an 8 ohm 2" speaker in the radioshack
blackbox....had to bend the frame slightly
to fit, and drill a pattern of holes in the top. Two minutes to readjust
the input pot to the computer and set vox and anti-vox levels ...et voila....I
was on the air on PSK.

Vox seems to work reliably. Power is reduced to 60%, which gives me just
over 50 watts out. The waterfall isn't as
clean as with the big radio...dual filtering DOES have a value. It works
fine.

Subject: [psk31] DSP's and PSK31

Hi Fellow PSK31 "WARBLER'S;

Just thought I'd share some observations concerning the use of Audio DSP
operation.

Yes, I read Peter's comments about using DSP's and I have no doubts
about his knowledge of the effectiveness of of their use with his fine
PSK31 software.

I also am using Richard Horne's Spectrogram program (GRAM.EXE version
5.07 for radio
people, http://www.monumental.com/rshorne/gramdl.html),and find it an
extremely
useful aid for easy tuning of PSK31 signals.

My first DSP was the NIR-10(with firmware upgrade) and later picked up a
Timewave 599zx, enjoying the best of both DSP worlds, by connecting them
in tandem (FT-1000 to NIR-10 to TIMEWAVE) to take advantage of the best
features of both units. I use this system with the PK-900 quite
effectively and on SSB; so, naturally I wanted to try to use with PSK31
anyway.

I use a FT-1000 with an ES Sound card and isolation xformers in both
Line In and Line Out paths.
My sound card Line In PSK31 signal come from the Line Out A RCA jack of
the Timewave. PSK31 signals going out are provided via the Patch In
jack of the FT-1000, and I use VOX control. All working great.

Using SPECTROGRAM, with the NIR-10 first bypassed, and the TIMEWAVE
set to VOICE, with the High Pass (HP) set to 960 and Lowpass (LP) 1040,
timewave AGC ON, RANDOM(noise) ON, I can more clearly present weak PSK31
signals on the Spectrogram screen to determine the precise frequency to
set when I go to Peters PSK31SBW program. I'm using USB and my FT-1000
SHIFT is set to about 1-3 clicks CCW with the 250 HZ filter selected.
Using the Spectrogram display, you can optimize the PSK31 signal
displayed and heard since, I also use my monitor MONI button on the
FT-1000. You can see and hear when you are right ON in freq. I then
put the NIR10 in line in the BandPass mode, first MED, then NARROW, and
adjust the BP Shift to peak the PSK31 Signal. I find the BP Shift
control quite effective against the Pactor signals competing for 14070.

Try it; it works for me. Happy Warbling :))

Hi Al and all,

Have just visited the SpectroGRAM web
http://monumental.com/rshorne/gram.html and have downloaded Spectrogram
version 5.07. On doing so I've learned that the Spectrum.dll, together with
full documentation and an example in C language is available for private,
non corporate, programmers..
Perhaps I am a bit behind with this piece of news but have immediately seen
my dream, and that of many of you, come true: PSKGNR as a Front End program
for PSK31 including the option to use many, if not all, the features of GRAM
scrolling spectrogram to help tune PSK31 signals and scan the freq. within a
range of more or less 3 kHz.!! Dear...!!.
I am not a programmer myself but sure would like to be, so as to help Al to
enhance his already very good program. I'm sure that Howard, KH6TY will
agree with me as I've visited his web and have read his thoughts about this
matter.
Best of luck to you all.

I am receiving many interesting suggestions about the September 4th PSK
contest, some suggesting rule/scoring changes. These are gratefully
received but due to publishing deadlines for those reprinting the contest
announcement, I do not intend to keep changing the rules. The original
mistake of including WARC bands was amended within 12 hours of the
announcement as was a URL error. Unless there are clear errors/mistakes we
will keep the rules/scoring the same and incorporate many of the fine
suggested improvements next year.

Thanks
Andy.

I should have included the Spectrogram Software Audio settings in my
first EMail. You'll need to set these to enjoy accurately setting the
PSK31 freq and observing the effects of various DSP settings:

Spectrogram Sample Rate 5.5 kHz
Freq Resolution 10.2 HZ
Band Hz 0-1378 HZ
Spectrum Average 1

Any thoughts on what would cause my signal to be wide in the PSK31 waterfall
on the left side only ? I have had this problem for a while and thought the
isolation transformer would fix things but just had a report tonight that I
had two extra vertical lines on the left, none on the right (no extra).

Andy.

Andy, what you may be seeing is the effect of 120-Hz hum on your
transmitter signal. Try to look at your r-f envelope with a scope under
steady carrier (F8) and two-tone (Spacebar) conditions to see if you can
spot any hum modulation.
