Subject: [psk31] ERROR MESSAGE
I am new to the group. I am on my second attempt to try FSK31. The
first attempt failed. The second might not fail since I have found a
group who has the same interest and may have already experienced this
problem.
Here is the problem:
As soon as the program starts, I get an error message like this:
" ERROR:
Sound Card: mmsystem032
The specified format cannot be translated or supported. Use the
capabilities function to view supported formats. "
I am using WIN95 and my sound card is a Sound Blaster Pro.
I have not been able to locate the Capabilities Function to see what this
might tell me. I have spent many hours trying to get this thing to
work.
Can someone out there please help?

Why all the different comments on how to hold a psk contest? Why have an all
band contest including or not including the WARC bands? Why not do it an
other way?
Most will prefer to use 20m due to propagation.
I am sure a psk contest will not bring out ten of thousands. The logs may not
be a huge burden for any decent size ham club.
How about 1 BAND per weekend? 24 hours........48 hours......what are your
comments? Which weekends ....... 1 a month.......2 a month?????
This will at least make us move to other bands or skip the contest weekend.

Hi, Andrew, thank you for PSK contest information.
I would like to inform you JA call area information.
Japanese call sign is now quite complex due to call sign shortage
like as US general or US extra.
JAx-JSx and 7Jx have normal call sign area number in Japan.
7K1-4, 7L1-4, 7M1-4, 7N1-4 are additionaly provided for 1 area due to
call sign shortage. 7Kx, 7Lx, 7Mx and 7Nx are 1 area station.
8Jx are basicaly provided for an anniversary station like as Nagano
Olympic
and the 8Jx has usually exact call sign area number except 8J1RL.
The 8J1RL is South Pole station.

Hi Jim. Upon reviewing some of the archived messages fro this reflector
(you can do this from the web page at:
http://www.kender.es/~edu/psk31.html) I found that anyone trying to use
a Sound Blaster Pro, cannot get them to work because they are an 8 bit
card. You need a 16 bit sound card. I use an old Sound Blaster 16. It
is so old that it is a 3/4 size ISA card. I have also used my
girlfriend's computer with an Ensonic sound card. Try a different
card. If you talk to the techs at computer repair places, they may have
a sound blaster 16 that they have from when they upgraded someone to a
newer card. Good Luck! When you get PSK31 going, you will like it.
I hope to catch you on 10m sometime, though I don't have much time for
radio these days.

What happened to the fine art of calling CQ? It seems to be out of fashion -
everybody is tuning across the PSK31 frequencies and then determining that there
is no activity. Come out of your holes and call CQ - you will be surprised.
Calling CQ seems to have given way to the rude habits of tail-ending in other
modes and even to calling before the previous QSO has been finished. No doubt
that the dx clusters have contributed to this - you don't even need to hear the
station to contribute to the pile up noise.
It is OK to call CQ even when it's not a CQ Contest call!
It can also be a good idea to spend a couple of minutes on the beacon frequency
28.200 MHz to get an idea about possible openings.

Hi All,
What is all this about the frequency plus this and minus
this? Are we
trying to use crystals for making contacts, or do it the old
fashion way of turning the rig on and look for a contact
around the area where a mode is supose to be? I don't think
we have this as a "Selcal" yet, but might be an option..
Pick a frequency say 14.070, and dial up the frequency, go
have dinner, come back, qsl the station that called you
while you were having dinner, and then check it before you
go to work in the morning! ;-) Just kidding, I still tune
the rig looking for contacts where-ever they are calling
cq, good hunting...

Hi Jim, the PRO won't work, it is not 16 bit processing..
Try to find another card. They are hard to find if you have
the older ISA slots but maybe used ones. No problem if you
are using PCI slots..
Good luck

Hi Marcus,
So I guess the point of your message is or everyone to report their freqs as
accual transmitted freqs. This is important for someone like me who is
using MixW32 sometimes, LSB and 750 Hz tone. MixW32 reports the trans-
mit freq is a small window. You'd be surprised how much it changes, when
the AFC moves it off the initial tone.

Hi Daryl,
There was lot of discussion of band plans and the use of 7070 on 40 on
this list a month or so ago, but nothing was ever done about it. Peter
explained why the freq of 7035 was selected. Possibly this freq, which
in my opinion is not as good in the US as 7070, is one of the reasons
why PSK31 has not caught on on 40. I have no sugestions except that
the decision of operating freq on 40 be revisited.

Actually, Paul, the com port to PTT is not a bad choice. I have a 757 but
I have never used it on PSK31. I have an Ten-Tec Omni VI, and after
much trouble, I finally got the VOX to work. I found that the isolation
transformer I had wired to ground on both sides where one side should
be grounded to the computer and the other side o the transceiver. You might
check on this, and also check on using the microphone input vice the
accessory jack for AF in. They to get the same AF in, determined by mike
gain settings, the mike has. That way, the VOX will think you are using
a mike, and work the way it was designed to.
