You might liven it up by having band-mults. That is, a ZL1 counts as a mult
on each band you work it.
Also, you could have contacts on bands other than 20 meters count 2 points,
versus only 1 point for 20.
Not sure that I personally favor that one...but it would bias the test toward
other bands.
It would be good to limit the test to exciter power only. No amps.
Although it seems a long way away...my dance card is filling up fast in the
Fall.

Dear Jim,
First of all, the suggestion to "Use the capabilities function to view supported
formats. "
is simply an unfortunate feature of the design. The Windows API provides certain
calls for the programmer to control the sound card. The windows message is
really telling the programmer that the sound card that is present does not meet
the configuration characteristics of the card that the program is trying to
open. The error handling in the program could have been organized to just simply
tell the user that he does not have a card that is capable of working with the
program. In other words, there is no way that the user of the program can use
the "capabilities function" because the programmer has to do that with a call to
"waveInGetDevCaps" (or something like that).
Take a look at the card - if it has only the XT class edge connector, then it
could not be a 16 bit card. If it has the full length ISA edge connector,
divided into two segments, then it would be a 16 bit card.
I am confused by your reference to FSK31. Did you mean PSK31 or are you actually
trying to use FSK31 from the MixW32 program? In either case, the card must have
16 bit A/D and D/A sound processing.

Subject: [psk31] PSKGNR ver 1.32 (PSKbare.zip)
Good morning to ALL:
I have just downloaded AL's 1.32 version of PSKGNR and have found
the following:
AL still has the 6/17/99 dated PSKGNR.exe inside of the ZIP'ed
File... BUT, he DOES HAVE the 6/28/99 dated PSKGNR.exe in
the ZIP'ed up file also ....
Caution: the NEWEST version 1.32 will DEAFULT into your ROOT
directory for the Drive that you have PSKGNR on... I found it
and have copied it into my PSKGNR directory..
I see by AL's words in his last email that he is out of town and
VERY BUSY right now .....
I pass this info on a FYI -- so that you can get the PSKGNR ver 1.32
into the proper DIRECTORY on your hard-drive.

Right, so it's easy to W32 users to report it this way. I tested W32 for a
while, set up the freq offset. As I understood, this resource is very useful
as soon as we use regular to wide IF filters, e.g. we don't need to play
with the transceiver frequency control: we can do it using the software
resources if within a 2.2 ..2.7 KHz window. And the program add (or
subtract) audio tone accordingly.
On Peter's program, the same use, but operating window is +/- 250Hz "each
mouse click" as waterfall. So we need an extra "math" that is add the tone
freq to the rig displayed freq.
The bottom line is: our transmit frequency is where I can find our signals
if I watch the band using a spectrum analyzer. On "digital" modes we'll have
a well defined occupied region (31Hz for PSK31, 200Hz for packet, RTTY,
amtor, 1KHz for MT63-1K, etc etc) and the freq is in the middle of such
region.
x-x-x-x-x-x
A thought: imagine a direct conversion receiver, without AGC. As Peter said
sometime ago, the software "dynamic range" is something like 44dB.
Translating this to S units (6dB each), starting with S0 we'll be able to
handle signals up to S7 + 3dB. This allow us to left the receiver at one
fixed frequency and "tune" the PSK band only using the software(s). A 22KHz
sampling rate give us a 7 KHz window ...
So there's possibility to use a direct conversion QRP rig, image rejecting,
xtal controlled + Laptop = PSK anywhere =:o) - if we know how to deal with
software down converter image caracteristics.

Perhaps a USED 16 bit card may be hard to find, but the brand new 16 bit Model
4170 cards from Creative Labs are still being sold at Best Buy stores at $49.
In fact, I hope to pick up a couple in the near future, because sound cards are
apparently very fragile. I have burned out the Line-In channel on one card and
have done damage to a portion of the mixer volume control on another one.

That's true, but the version number on the 6/28 file is still 1.31.4 and
the file is exactly the same number of bytes...so it isn't the new one.

Version 1.32 " is " there! ... IF you will look "inside" of the zip'ed

of manual files and pskgnr.exe files..... (((( the one "set" that
defaults into your root directory (for the drive that you have

problem with the way that he made up the zip'ed file. BUT, with AL
being out of town this week, it might be a little bit before he gets
around to making the needed change.

WHAT???
Hey, this is fine with me.....my exciter is a single 4cx350, it runs 400
watts out!
This 'no amps' rule just doesnt seem fair as it makes the Ten Tec QRP
exciters run in the same class as someone like me (that has my own design
exciter).
There are always problems of this sort when NON-CONTESTERS try to write
rules for contests....not that it's bad....but clearly this 'no amp' rule
needs a re-write::>
By the way-mults for everything please......it's the only way to increase
activity on bands where operation wouldn't normally occurr!
Try something like 4 basic QSO points per Q on 6 and 2, 3 for every Q on
40, 15 and 10, 4 for every 80m Q and 2 points for every 20m Q. In other
words-give them an incentive to run less power, to work atleast one station
on a different country, atleast one station in a different continent, extra
bonus points for worked all states....come on guys, show some creativity
please!
I STRONGLY suggest 'activity hours' be posted in advance-it would give a
much better chance of having more stations on the same band at the same
time (random operating schedules do not serve the best interest of those
who want to work everyone on every band).
GL to all.

If you UNZIP'd the "complete" file that you downloaded as
PSKGNR1.32, then please go into your ROOT DIRECTORY of
the drive that has PSKGNR on it -- and you will find the REAL
ver 1.32 of PSKGNR there ... and then just copy them over to the
PSKGNR directory.... I HAVE 1.32 now installed with no more
problems.

I just downloaded PSKgnr yesterday and began to use it. It has a copy and
paste feature.
The problem is that Windows clipboard only allows you to copy one item at a
time. I have been using ClipMate 4.5 by Thornsoft for a couple of years,
which allows you to copy multiple
texts before pasting. I found this program very convenient when downloading
off the internet.
When Clipmate is active, it takes over from Windows clipboard. I am now
using it with
PSKgnr Front End, which allows me to copy and store more than one text item
and be used later. The text stays in Clipmate until you physically delete.
Information about Clipmate can be found at: www.thornsolft.com.

Yep, finally found it. I had pulled the latest one, but didn't notice
that it put itself in the next folder up. So I knew I had the latest
file, but it wasn't in the gnr folder. ;o)
Got it working now. I think Peter should have put something in the
setup so you didn't have to "fix" the .ini file, but at least it works
now.
Thanks a bunch and take care.

Subject: Re: [psk31] Frequency
Hi Robbie et al ...
>What is all this about the frequency plus this and minus

Well, it's simply a request to users (any mode), if possible, report the
correct frequency. On my point of view, a mode that uses 31Hz of BW
proportionally needs more accurate reports. 1KHz difference, for schedules
contacts is too much. Imagine a crowded PSK segment on 20 meter and U
searching for some station that scheduled a contact but I'm 1KHz bellow (or
above). With marginal signals, it's much easier look for it on a 100Hz slot
than in a 1KHz one. This was the idea.
> Are we
>trying to use crystals for making contacts, or do it the old

Both: looking for weak signals on 40, 30, 17,12 or 10 meter for instance,
where nobody shows up as desired, can be much easier if I know where I can
park and wait. To improve MDS I run 100 or 200 Hz filters so better know
where to look for within 100 or 200 Hz ...
On the other side, I sweep those bands up and down each 100Hz slot trying to
find something or even uses regular (2k2/2k7) filters and FFT displays to
help me. If tools are available, why not use them?
> I don't think
>we have this as a "Selcal" yet, but might be an option..
Well, I oriented my way of thinking more on moon bounce techniques than on
TOR ones: if I'm looking for a 1 Watt ZL2 fellow on PSK31 alone late in the
night, for shure I'll catch him and don't need to park anywhere (already
happened with ZL2/1watt, VE/5watts, DL/1watt, CX/0,25w) since the band is
quiet. But under crowded conditions ... I missed BV4, 7X4, TR ...
On other side, I have some wrong habits due to long wave NDB DXing where the
selective fading lasts for 5 to 10 minutes ... I need to park and wait ...
>Pick a frequency say 14.070, and dial up the frequency, go

Hi .. I read this some years ago on a magazine ... identify the call, turn
the beam, adjust for the best height/elevation angle, call him, decode CW ,
answer, log, print QSL ... during dinner :o)
>Just kidding, I still tune
>the rig looking for contacts where-ever they are calling
>cq, good hunting...
Yes yes .. see ... somebody complain - shout is the word - to a 900 user
connected DX-Cluster why is PY3CRX reporting the DXes 1KHz above the "real"
frequency? So I posted the comment here. But doesn't matter. I'll keep
searching DX on PSK as usually do (turning knob=up/down arrow keys) and
think twice before spot them on clusters. And when I see a PSK spot I'll
remember to watch 1000 up, zero or 1000 down assuming the reporting station
tone is close to 1000Hz.
Better forget this and use this internet time looking for contacts :o)
