Hi to all,

Following text, I find it strongly recommandable, is worth reading,
as much as the software is worth trying...
Besides, for paragon 585 users (just like me),
			it is just a gem...

Good luck,
Alec/SP2EWQ

quote:
Logger Ver. 6.07 is now released and available at
http://www.itis.net/golist on the download page. Thanks to all Beta
testers and all who made valuable suggestions on how to improve the
program. All known bugs are fixed, and there are many small
changes/enhancements (most of which you will probably never even
notice).

If you download and install the newer version, please read the Help
section for 'Changes in this Version' to find out the major changes that
may impact you (and your individual configuration). Many of the smaller
changes/enhancements are not mentioned in 'Changes in this Version', but
are detailed in the relevant Help sections.

As existing Logger users, you need to download the Logger Update file.
The file downloads as Loggerupd.zip, and unzips as Install.exe - When
running Install, ignore the usual warning message about the install
program not being licensed (I'll get around to that one of these days).

I hope you like it, have fun, 73
Bob.

Don Sipes reports on his efforts in setting up his first PSK31 station as
follows:

>My setup consists of G3PLX software, a Creative Labs SB16 and an Icom 729. The
729
>uses a DIN accessory plug for access to the radios Tx and RX audio and uses a
common
>Ground connection. I've wired that end with 2 coaxial audio cables, the centre
>conductor of each cable to the TX and RX pins respectively, and the shields
shorted
>together and connected to the common ground pin.

Since I have no information on the ICOM-729 and have never seen any pins labeled
TX and RX, I am foregoing any comment on that end of the cable.

>My question is what to do at the
>SB16 end. Do I wire to use just one of the SB16s stereo channels ( left or
right)
>or bridge the TIP and Ring of the mini phone plugs to feed both SB16 channels
in
>parrallel (left and right)???

What many of us do is to arbitrarily pick Left or Right as our path in one
direction and then pick the opposite side for the other direction. For example,
I use Right Channel for the output of the sound card and Left Channel for the
Input to the sound cards.

I DO NOT recommend ever bridging across the tip and ring of any plugs used with
sound cards. It may not harm the sound card but why take any unnecessary
chances?
This is also the reason why I do not recommend using the monaural plugs for
stereo jacks, and that goes for the microphone input jack of the sound cards.
Even though the microphone circuit is monaural, its input jack on the sound card
is a stereo jack and the ring connection is actually the return or cold side,
which should be taken to ground in the microphone itself. I never have figured
that one out. I have found that some microphones with monaural plugs do not
seem to work reliably with the Sound Blaster cards.

>To get started I'm going to use VOX to key the radio,
>but I have no problem building a keying circuit to hard key from the serial
port if
>I need to.

Many people use the VOX circuit successfully. However, I stay away from it for
several reasons, as follows:
a) The VOX setup is often as many as 3 different adjustments - Vox level, Vox
Delay and Anti-Vox.
b) The level of audio into the microphone input jack must be reduced by a
potentiometer or a step down transformer in order to avoid overdriving the input
circuitry of the transmitter
c) The PTT circuit of the rig is 100% reliable for keying the rig
d) The connections must be made to the front of the rig and the microphone cable
must be connected and disconnected when switching between PSK and voice modes.
[Don't tell me about the MFJ switch - I have one]

The serial port that gets tied up by using it to key the PSK31 mode is a
definite drawback. Fortunately, in my configuration, the PC uses a PS/2 mouse
and that leaves me with two serial ports for MODEM and PSK31. Were that not the
case, I would use an A/B switch of the type designed to switch between two
printers on parallel ports, because I would not likely need the MODEM and the
PSK mode at the same time.

I finished building and testing my PSK31 Box and made some contacts
using this new mode. I must say it is really a great new digital mode.
I'm sure most of you have read the May 99 QST Pg. 41 article introducing
PSK31; if not you must read it. It is a relatively simple project.
Visit the following WebSite to learn more, if your not already on PSK.
I know Art K6XT & Harry W6YOO are already up and running.

http://www.qsl.net/wm2u/psk31.html

NOTE: DON"T try to bring up this site AFTER you build your PSK Box and
have the PSK31 software going, because the PSK software grabs the sound
card and this site need it too.

Here you can hear PSK31 and see the recommended configuration. I have a
FT-1000 and ES 1868 + ES 938 Sound Card and used the isolation
transformer ckt shown at this site, except I used 1:1 isolation Xformers
for both, instead of the sudio xformer shown at the site above. I
built it all on a small Radio Shack printed ckt board, and housed it in
a small metal box also available at Radio Shack. The two 50 K Pots are
mounted on the Box which is spray painted gray and includes Meter
Measuring test points on the front, to observe signal levels.
Basically, I take Line Out audio from my Timewave DSP to the PSK31 Box
via shielded cable with ferrites, through the 1:1 isolation xformer and
voltage divider, out via shielded cable with ferrites, to Line In of the
sound card. The audio from the sound card for the FT-1000 comes out my
ES Sound card via the Line Out/Spkr jack( I removed my Spkrs) via
shielded cable with ferrites, back to PSK Box, through a voltage divider
and 1:1 isolation xformer, out the box via shielded with ferrites cable,
to the Patch In RCA jack on the back of the FT-1000. I had to drop the
line out software controlled System Mixer levels to the first tick marks
to get the VOX to control Transmit properly. For the signals coming
from the FT-1000, I adjusted the Line In Record level to maximum.
Also, you'll have to select Left or Right channel, depending on how you
wired the left right channel plug.

I subscribed to the PSK31 Mailing list and read all the past EMails to
get up to speed first. Also, read the Help File included with the
software; it's very informative. Here's another site, where I
downloaded the software:

I have been having a ball using PSK31 and on behalf of all of us, wish
to thank YOU VERY MUCH Peter, G3PLX for permitting us to enjoy the
fruits of your very hard work.

Subject: [psk31] COM port for PSK31SBW

From Peter Martinez G3PLX

It may be easier to decide how to configure COM3 or COM4 for PSK31SBW
PTT if I tell you that PSK31SBW doesn't need an IRQ line. It just
opens and closes the COM port and toggles the RTS and DTR pins. It
doesn't send any traffic or receive any traffic.

I don't think you can set Windows so that a COM port doesn't have an
IRQ, but if you do your extra COM3/4 ports with a plug-in card, you
could tell Windows that you are sharing the COM3/4 IRQ lines with
COM1/2 but simply not fit the appropriate IRQ jumpers on the card.
This way you could even have PSK31SBW running with COM3 or 4 while
another program is using COM1 or 2. If you cannot disable the IRQs
this way on COM3/4, you can still tell windows that you are sharing
IRQ's but you must remember NOT to use COM1 when COM3 is in use (or
vice versa) or COM2 when COM4 is in use (or vice versa).

I use the RTS line going to my existing KAM. The Kam is not switch on
during PSK31 work but the RTS line toggles and operates the PTT anyway.
