Well I made my first PSK31 contact. Worked KB0OBQ on 20 meters. This is
neat and you can back space hihi. The Falling water tuning is going to take
some getting used to though. Question. Does PSK31 technically count as RTTY
For WAS or is it officially recognised as itself for awards ?

Hi Daryl,
Welcome to PSK31!. It counts as "Digital," along with RTTY, AMTOR, PACTOR,
PACKET, etc; except in a contest for PSK31. Most log programs now do not
have a place to record PSK31 as a mode, in that case, log as Digital
or RTTY, and make note in the remarks that it is PSK31.
Good luck and 73

Hello there.
A request!
Please could the few subscribers who don't, copy the majority of us and put
[psk31] in the Subject line when sending messages.
This will ensure that your message gets filtered into the PSK folder along
with all the others and doesn't end up among a load of unrelated ones.
Only a small request, but it would help a lot!
Many thanks.

Subject: [psk31] Use of Filters On Ten-Tec Omni VI
Hi All,
This tip is for Ten-Tec Omni VI owners, or of any rig
that lets you use the narrow CW filters in the SSB modes.
In the Omni-VI you can select either one 1.8 Khz, 500 or 250 Hz
filter, and simultaneously, select another narrow filter, N-1
or N-2. For N-1 and N-2 you have the choice of several optional
filters from 250 Hz to 2.4 Khz which are optimized for the mode.
In My Omni -VI I have a 250 Hz CW filter in position N-1. In CW
I can cascade either the 1.8KHz , the 500 Hz or the 250 Hz filter
with the N-1 filter which is a 250 Hz CW filter (or a N-2 filter if I
had one installed) for better slope rejection. That's the way you are
supposed to use the N-1/N-2 filers. I cannot use the 250 Hz CW filter
in the USB mode at all as the carrier offset is out of its range.
However, in playing around with MixW32 which defaults to the LSB
mode for digital modes, I found I can use the N-1 filter, if I
set the PSK31 Rx audio freq about 750 Hz. The setting
of audio freq is key to using both the N-1 and 250
Hz filters simultaneously in the LSB mode, as you have to use the
PBT control to center the received tone in both filters. It does
have some adjustment range, but unlike in CW
mode, the adjustment range is somewhat limited.
When using LSB, you have to use inverted QPSK
in both MixW32 and PSK31SBW. Other than that,
LSB works fine. It reverses the direction of tuning
of the waterfall display and the carrier offset, but
that's a matter of getting used to.
Some say that the narrow filters are not necessary,
but I have found that if a very strong signal is within
the SSB bandpass, it captures the AGC, and if I am
trying to copy a weak signal in that bandpass, it
greatly reduces the receiver gain and the ability to
copy that weak signal. Reducing the bandpass
to 500 or 250 Hz, will eliminate or greatly reduce this
effect for signals not in the 500 or 250 Hz bandpass.
Thought someone would like to know.
BTW, happy 4th (see below).

Subject: The slash-0 solution
From Peter Martinez G3PLX and Al Williams WD5GNR
Users of the PSKGNR front-end for the PSK31SBW program will have seen
that an option enables the transmission of the character Ø (ANSI code
216) in place of the character 0 (ASCII code 48). This is intended to
make the difference between the number 0 and the letter O clearer.
Regular readers of the reflector will recall a report that Russian
and Japanses users of PSK31 have problems with this, since their
Windows versions do not display the ANSI characters 128-255 but
instead display symbols in their own languages. Also, PSK31 users who
are not using Windows at all, for example those using the SCS PTC-2
terminal with it's Plusterm Terminal program, will also receive a
corrupt number zero from a PSKGNR station who has this slashed-0
feature turned on, and some languages such as Norwegian use the Ø
symbol as a letter, which can thus lead to confusion.
It seemed that it would be a better solution to move this feature to
the receive-side rather than the transmit side. However, this was not
something that could be done in the PSKGNR program alone, since the
receive-side is handled entirely by the PSK31SBW program.
Simultaneous changes to both programs would be needed.
These have now been done. Version 1.07 of PSK31SBW and version 1.32.0
of PSKGNR together implement the display of the slashed-0 in such a
way that the original ASCII code is transmitted over the air and
cannot now cause trouble for non-ANSI receivers.
Users of the PSK31SBW/PSKGNR combination who have, up to now, enabled
the transmission of the slash-0 symbol, should update both programs
together and stop using the earlier versions as soon as they can.
Users of the PSK31SBW/PSKGNR combination who will never use the
slash-0 feature need not upgrade if they don't want to.
Users of PSK31SBW alone who would like to have the option to display
zeros with a slash through them can upgrade to PSK31SBW version 1.07.
Users of PSK31SBW alone who will never use the slash-0 feature need
not upgrade if they don't want to.
By the time you read this the PSK31SBW v 1.07 will be downloadable
from http://aintel.bi.ehu.es/psk31.html
and PSKGNR v1.32.0 from http://wd5gnr.virtualave.net

Halleluja,
There is life on other bands. Just worked KC5OGT (Koy in Lubbock Texas) on
28.120
so a few are at least trying the other bands. I've been checking 40 15 and 10
meters
regularly and today is the first time I've heard a signal on anything but 20.

Dear Keith,
I'm wondering which e-mail client program you are using.
I use IE4.0, which is more or less the standard for Windows 98, and it's part of
Outlook Express. For those who use that e-mail client, the menu Tools -> Inbox
Assistant will allow you to describe a filter that looks for the string "psk31"
in ANY of the fields - "From", "To", "CC:", or "Subject". That would be the
simpler solution to your problem if you have that particular e-mail client (or
one with like features).
