Does your computer have a built-in microphone that could be picking up
sound from your rig speaker? My laptop prints perfect PSK31 with no wire
connections using its mic and my rig speaker about 4 feet away from it!

Try muting all the incoming lines except those you are actually using.

I have read the mail on a couple of stations beta-testing this software,
but I have no details on its availability, other than the comment of one
tester who mentioned that it would not be free but would be shareware. I
gather that the program still possesses enough bugs to delay its
publishing. It also affords a mode called FSK31 which I was unable to
print using PSK31.

way for us to resolve issues. Concerning FM use of digital modes, when I first
got into RTTY, we used FM. Every one would send his audio
tones to his 2 meter FM transceiver, and we used a repeater dedicted to RTTY.
We all were using teleprinters; I had a model 19. We would leave
the teleprinter on and if someone had a message he would send it, and it
would be on everyone's teleprinter. First BBS. That was before packet.

I read that some were stating they didn't have a TNC. There's software out
there, mostly for Linux, that uses the sound card instead of a TNC. It works
on 9600 Baud. I've lost touch in the last three months since I have been on
PSK31, but if anyone wants any info, I can dig it up. Also, you can start with
tapr.org site.

I just see PSK31 as a unique communication mode that has some very positive
advantages in its present form of implementation. To try to use it for some
other applications may be a misuse and may require reinventing some wheels.
I you want to use it on FM with 2 watts and a rubber duck, fine. Have fun.
 But just
don't insist that you must send computer files at 9600 baud with it.

What I would like to see is a good SSB QRP HF transceiver that we could use
for PSK31. I understand that there are some out there. We don't need $3000
transceivers to enjoy the mode. A laptop, QRP rig, a corner of the den, a home
made vertical and you're in PSK31 business.

From Peter Martinez G3PLX

I agree with george W5YR that it's not constructive to think that
because PSK31 is so good compared to RTTY on HF, that it would do
wonderful things replacing packet on VHF FM. PSK31 is rather slow,
not resilient to collisions, not suitable for binary files, and so
on. One of the reasons that I decided to give PSK31 away for free was
that I cannot see any non-amateur application for it, since it
doesn't harmonise well with the commercial ideal of transmitting
faster, more reliably, and without human intervention.

However, there is one interesting aspect of it's very narrow
bandwidth that might find a VHF FM application, and that centres on
the fact that you can actually set the audio frequency down below the
audio range and send PSK31 on a sub-audible tone, modulating this
inaudible tone onto an existing FM voice or packet transmitter, and
thus make a slow speed text broadcast. This could be weather
information, telemetry for the main equipment, or almost any other
kind of public service broadcast. In the same way that a CTCSS tone
is inaudible, the PSK31 signal would be inaudible. Of course you
might have to be careful not to get interference to/from a CTCSS tone
if one was in use on the transmitter already. QPSK would be better
than BPSK for this kind of operation.

Even if you are not concerned with simultaneous PSK31/voice, but just
want to play with PSK31 on VHF FM across town, using a low audio tone
will get through better, since the SNR of an FM channel gets better
and better as you go lower in modulation frequency. PSK31SBW will let
you go as low as 32Hz, and your soundcard and radio will probably be
struggling before you get that low. There might be a good reason to
choose 75Hz (or 90Hz in america) to avoid the power-line frequency
and it's second harmonic.

There are other people considering non-HF-radio applications of
PSK31, for example underground communications where radio doesn't
work at all. The method of communication is by magnetic field alone.
The signals drop off twice as fast with distance as radio does, so
the weak-signal properties of PSK31 are attractive for cave safety
links. To do this you just feed the soundcard speaker output into a
loop and detect it some distance away with another loop feeding the
mike input of the receiving soundcard. The best dx is of the order of
several hundred metres, but that's better than you can get by any
other method if you cannot rely on landline wires for safety links.

If you think high baud rates might be interesting for PSK on VHF,
then just remember that it's all been done before. Aviation has been
using 1200 baud QPSK (2400 bps) on VHF for a while, although they use
AM not FM of course. And why stop at that speed or even at 9600 baud
PSK. Your internet modem uses multi-level PSK and the signal is no
wider than voice and has all the error-correction you want. Connect
that to your VHF FM radio and work at 28.8 kb or faster. This
particular wheel has already been invented!

Subject: Re: [psk31] LACK of DX on PSK31.

Hi Andy!

Well, as you know I've been monitoring PSK31 for a little over 2 weeks now
from here in England. I've certainly logged many more countries than 15-20
during that time. Most seem to come between 1500z and 0000z, or from 0500z
to 0800z.

So where have I logged? Well, here's the complete list:-

80m : DL
40m : DL, F, G, HB9, OZ
20m : 5N, 5R, A92, AP, CE, CN, CU, CX, DL, EA, EA8, EK, ES, EX, F, G, GM, GW,
HA, HB9, I, JA, LA, LX, LY, LZ, OE, OH, OH0, OK, OM, ON, PA, PY, SM, SP, SV,
UA3, UA9, UR, VK, W (1 through 0), WL7, XE, ZL
15m : 9K2, DL, EA9, I, JA, SM, UA3, W6

I make that 48 different countries. Many of them have produced several
stations per country too.

Last night (2000z), 20m was really going into the US. Sadly there weren't
very many around. W6HLC, WQ4Q, N8GP, WA3IIA and WA2VOS all went into the log
with 599 signals. WL7VO was the surprise package though, coming over the
pole with some arctic flutter, but still almost a 100% copy whilst he was
working David - A92GE. Really nice condx.

I received an e-mail from Dov - 4Z4DX on Saturday asking me to send him the
PSK31 software as an e-mail attachment, which of course, I duly did.
Hopefully he'll be on this wonderful mode too in the not too distant future.

A quick question for the reflector now. Why are so few of you active on
PSK31 on 15m? Many times 15m is open, yet there isn't a PSK signal to be
seen or heard! As for WARC, well do any of you use the frequency allocations
there? I've not heard one single PSK signal on any WARC band yet.

Just a point, I recently downloaded the IZ8BLY Feld-Hell software too and
it's amazing how many people are active on that, who also use PSK! Not as
many countries in the log there though :o)

Well that's the reply I sent to the other PSK reflector when Andy posted
there. Didn't generate as much interest over there as it has done here
already :o)

BTW, added country 49 today when I logged 5Z4FM on 15m PSK31!!

Dear Jim,

I have no idea what you mean by "isolation transformers between incoming signal
and outgoing".

If I take that literally, it says that you have a connection from incoming
signal to the outgoing signal through one or more isolation transformers. Either
the grammar or your circuit is in trouble - Hi.

>I can tune in

How does this garbage manifest itself? Apparently you are not seeing it in the
waterfall because you say the waterfall is working correctly. Apparently it is
not in the Phase Scope, because you say the yellow arrows are pointing up. I
hope you mean that the yellow lines point up and down since there are no
"arrows".

So where does the "garbage" manifest itself - only in the printing? If so, there
almost has to be a hum or a spurious input to the sound card, and it should show
up as defective display either in waterfall or phase scope. No one ever sees
problems from the software, sound card, or the computer alone.

I suggest that you plug in a pair of earphones into the output of your sound
card and see if you hear anything. You should NOT hear anything - even the
signals that you think that you "should" be hearing. George, W5YR, has warned
you of the possibility of an open microphone somewhere. The input lines in the
Mixer should all be muted. Any microphone volume control other than the one
that you using should have its volume turned completely down. Above all, make
sure that ALL INPUT LINES ARE MUTED (Use the Mute check boxes).

There's no reason that I know of for you to be using a DSP between the receiver
and the sound card. So get rid of that.

Keep it simple. The DSP is not going to do a single thing for PSK31 signals
other than make what you hear and what you see in the waterfall a bit less
jumbled.

Try putting a ground blocker from the PC's power strip to wall outlet. Quite
often ground loop in the ac mains ground wire can be the problem. Both the PC
power strip and the transceiver's power supply should be plugged into a common
wall outlet to minimize such problems.
