Or maybe it depends on what you're trying to accomplish.
"Straight" PSK31 (PSK audio modulating an SSB rig) has already proven
itself quite nicely for weak-signal work on VHF. In May, Oscar, C02OJ in
Havana told me he had QSOed Florida with excellent copy using just a couple
of watts and a modest antenna (I don't remember the exact figures). Others
have mentioned using it for VHF DX with good results.
I'd be interested in hearing comparisons of PSK31 and slow CW on VHF.
We've all heard HF conditions under which we could copy the CW ID but not
the PSK signal, and vice versa. What happens at the threshold of
readability on VHF? Is the noise "whiter" that on HF, and therefore can we
copy PSK31 at lower S/N ratios? Is the tradeoff between bandwidth and
weak-signal copy different at VHF and above?
Did anyone use PSK in the VHF contest this past weekend, or was everybody
too busy with ANARTS? :-) How about the moonbounce tests someone
mentioned they were going to try? "Inquiring minds want to know."
I had a PSK31 QSO with DL6DBN in Germany on the Oscar 10 satellite (about
60,000 km round trip). I copied my own signal on the downlink near apogee
(nearly 76,000 km round trip). Signal weakness was less of an issue than
transponder frequency shift.
Also note that 400 bps PSK has been used on digital satellites for years,
and has been standard for Oscar Phase III command stations. This is faster
than PSK31, but much slower than 1200 or 9600 baud.
For *true* weak-signal work, modulating FM with PSK31 is probably not the
way to go. You're simply putting narrow-bandwidth audio into a
voice-bandwidth signal, so you're losing some of the advantages of PSK31.
"Straight" PSK31 should always do better at the very fringe of readability.
However, I suspect PSK31 over FM should extend someone's local FM range a
bit beyond voice, so why not try it? I'd say just pick a simplex frequency
a bit away from the more used ones, and stay away from 146.52 (the U.S. 2m
FM simplex calling frequency).
When I was a Novice in the late '60s, we practiced code on 2m by feeding a
code oscillator into a Heathkit "Lunch Box" AM transceiver. Not very high
tech, but it worked. When we upgraded, we found that sometimes we could
complete a contact with "MCW" that we couldn't quite do with voice. I
suspect PSK will aid a "scratchy" signal in much the same way. You're not
going to compete with the true VHF DXers, but every little bit helps.
All the FM stuff is speculation on my part, I haven't tried it!

Welcome everybody !
I'm using PSK31 with an IC706MKII radio and wonder if it is possible to
reduce the passband with the CW narrow filter while using USB and its
standard filter.
In fact with a widesized filter for USB (2.4 kHz), the agc reduces the gain
even on weak signals when a louder signal (often RTTY) is received inside
the filter passband.
I would be very happy to read your tips and advices.

I am surprised about the LACK of DX on PSK31. Perhaps I am monitoring at
the wrong times but it seems that there are about 15-20 DX countries
presently, not much more.
I have seen or worked W's, VE's, G's, JA's, V73's, F's, VK's, SM's, ON's,
DL's, XE's, HA's, KP2's, FG's, and that's about it. I "lowered" myself
and went RTTY
during the contest last weekend and had all kinds of DX.
Anyone see more DX on PSK ?

Hello Andy, I copied A92GE on psk last night about 0230z working a W2
station on the east coast on 20m. Both were very readeable from Dallas,
TX. I dont have my sound card connected yet. Had the microphone laying
on top of by Ft1000D over the speaker. 73, Ed - N5NUG

Subject: [psk31] garbage on screen
Hi to all: I have finally gotten all connections set up properly with
isolation transformers between incoming signal and outgoing. I can tune in
the psk signals with proper yellow arrows point up and waterfall working
correctly. However, intermixed with incoming signals is alot of garbage so
that it is not possible to read the messages. Even with xceiver
disconnected and computer just sitting there, I continue to get printing of
garbage, I have a Kenwood 530S and running from DSP thru isolation
transformer to microphone input in the computer and use speaker output to
microphone input of transceiver and VOX. It appears that I have some kind
of internal feedback from the computer. I have disconnected the speakers
from the sound board so it's not that. I also installed a AC line filter
in the power strip to the computer as suggested by somebody on here.
Ant ideas?? Tnx Jim

Yes. What's the advantgage? We have 9600 baud packet that runs TCP/IP,
and 56k packet too. TAPR is working on high speed spread spectrum for 908,
and if you're looking for a PS digital mode, there is one used for satellite
communication. I can see the use of PSK31 on 2 meter and 440 SSB as
a true weak signal mode, but to put your audio on an FM transceiver and
double its bandwidth and lose most of its weak signal capability is a reduction
in the state of the art. Then to try to increase its speed and take the place
of some of the well established VHF/UHF high speed digital modes, to me
is a waste of time, and doomed to failure from the start. First, you need a
protocol like AX25, and then a network layer like Flexnet or TCP/IP. PSK31
was invented as a keyboard to keyboard mode to improve on RTTY and not
to be a networking mode of which there are ample existing modes.
My opinion.

Hi,
What is the correct version of the Linux kernel to run PSK31 ?
Are there any special options that have to used when compiling
the kernel ?
Is it possible to run PSK31 / LINUX on a 20Mhz 386SX ?

Andrew, give psk a chance. It is a new mode taking off pretty quickly. There
are many stations using psk.
Not all countries have the help files in their native language and help files
are being converted. Beta testing is being done on different versions of psk,
some with other modes included with a front end all in one package.
Most activity is on 20M but cq's on 10 and 15 have turned up some countries
not heard on 20M.
I have not heard any psk contest work during the ANARTS contest. This may be
good or bad depending on your attitude about contests. Lets get psk going
strong before contest work is even considered. Just enjoying the ragchews and
lets leave contesting to rtty for the time being.

Well, Charles, that's why I brought it up: to try to see if someone might be able to discover an advantage. Thinking "outside the envelope" is the way new ideas become "inventions." A year ago, who would have thought that RTTY would ever have a challenger?
I guess one small advantage I see is that PSK can use the DSP capabilities of your PC's soundcard---a capability that is grossly under-utilized in most PCs. It also might be that Peter's thoughts on Varicode could bring about an improvement in throughput of existing modes.
Your points are all very good ones. And I am inclined to agree with all of them, especially the lack of error correction on PSK, since it was not designed to be error free. But, based on Peter's excellent discussions of QPSK, I'll bet that he has some thoughts on error correction with PSK that, given more bandwidth (as available in VHF/UHF), might be able to challenge packet.
Enjoying the fruitful discussion...

Hi Andrew et all ...
Well. PY is not DX anyway but up to now I have only 40 worked countries
(according with DXCC countries list) and 17 zones. One 30 meter QSO, several
on 20m, 3 on 17m, other bunch on 15m, two on 12m and few on 10m.
171 logged QSOs besides the 28 contacts I did on Rumble PSK31 contest, not
logged to my "PSK31 DXCC list" hi .. May be there I find some new country.
In January PSK31 seems a DX mode ... since February DX stations reduced and
much more ragchewing QSOs took place. But I still hunting.
BTW, follows msg I received from other reflector:
- ---------
Josef OK2WO, Jiri OK2WY and Peter OK2ZR will be active from 18. till 22.
June from Liechtenstein, HB0. Preferred modes will be PSK31, Feld-Hell
and RTTY on HF, cw/ssb on 6m. QSL via home calls. See clusters for actual
QRG.
