Subject: Advice with purchase of TNC
Hi guys
Im a newbie to digital modes although I have been on VHF packet for some
time with an AEA PK900. Doesn't seem to be doing a very good job on HF.
Difficult to tune and I have yet to have an Amtor/Pactor etc qso.

Hi guys
Despite the fact that I have been licensed on HF for several years, I am a
newbie to digital modes. I currently have an AEA PK 900 with which I work
vhf packet but I have not managed a single contact on hf on any of the
advertised modes (Amtor, Pactor).and one very brief contact on RTTY but this
lasted less than one minute.
The rig I use is a Kenwood TS-440S which has been doing a marvelous job all
these years on all modes (has FSK mode for data) and is in perfect
condition. Some of the names that have come up in conversations with other
hams is Hal. I had a Kantronics on loan for a while and was not impressed by
its performance - mind you that was a few years ago and the quality may have
improved some. It just did not seem able to pick out weak signals.
One of the recent issues of CQ magazibe ran a story on the Hal and the
reviewer seemed to like it a lot.
Ideally, I would also like to use it for satellite work (phase rd etc) but
it sems to me
that it simply is not possible to get all modes in one package.
I would also like to know which are currently the preferred and most popular
data modes
I would greatly appreciate any and all advice from you experienced bunch as
to which way to go. Getting the gear to South Africa is not a problem as a
friend from New York is coming to visit me in December and has kindly
volunteered to bring it along
I am going to post this same message on the other packet boards as well in
case some guru only reads the one board and misses it. No offence intended/
73's and all the best
Kind regards

Subject: Install a Baycom on PowerBook 145B
Hi Luc
>I need install a Baycom modem on my PowerBook 145B.
>My Baycom is in PC DB9 Serial port.
>Anyone can send a pinout converting DB9 to DIN 8 (Mac miniDin).
>
>Can I run the SoftKiss (Baycom soft packet) in my old PowerBook 145B?
I can help you with the pinout:
Mini-Din-8 (male) pinout, seen from the soldering side:
V
8 7 6
5 43
2 1
RS232 dSub 25 (female), seen from the soldering side:
13.............1
25..........14
Now, here is the pinout for an adapter RS422 to RS232, connecting a Mac to
a PC (null modem):
HsKo 1 --- CTS 5
HsKi 2 --- RTS 4
TxD- 3 --- RxD 3
GND 4 --- SG 7
RxD- 5 --- TxD 2
GPi 7 DSR 6
GND 4 - DCD 8
|
RxD+ 8 - DTR 20
I hope this helps. Check out
http://macsupport.about.com/compute/macsupport/.
There you can find links with more info. Otherwise hardware handshake modem
cables RS422 to RS232 are available in Mac shops. Just keep in mind, that
those cables usually have DTR wired to 'ready' all the time.
