in AGW soundcard mode. AGW is the last part of the aurthors call
sign, by the way. See link above.

AGW PE is supossed to have fixes. Although, not well documented
what is fixed, I set it as I have discovered before. Run it
and "Right Click" it's tab and select properties. I set it for
COM1 and 1200b both on the port and the packet speed (the only
way it would work before). Select soundcard as well. Pick the
regular soundcard, not the funky ones unless they are for you
(don't worry it probably isn't). You must then close and restart
AGWPE.

I (by the way) tried every option (erases them when you close)
on WinAPRS and it does not work for me! Yes, of course I set it
for AGW.

I unziped and installed UI-View. Clicked "Setup" and then "Comms
Setup". Then Just select AGW as the host mode.

I also downloaded USA maps for UI-view. Just manualy copy them
into it's "MAPS" directory. You then load them from UI's drop
down menu. Nice maps, not just lines. Get one for your local.

Now for my rig. First of all I'm on a Pentuim notebook. I'm
testing with a Yaesu VX-1r mini HT of all things. The VX-1r
needs the not well thought out *four* ring plug which resembles
the three ring stero one that goes into soundcards. My cable has
open wires on the other end.

If you are hooking up a mobile, you will not need this special
cable. Anyway, for this test I recomend simply hooking up radio
Speaker-out to computer soundcard Line-in. All you need to do is
hook two wires (including ground) from the radio (my special VX-
1 cable) to two wires on a stero (three ring) type plug fitted
into your souncards Line-in (I choose the Left Channel = middle
ring).

Do this setup first. Get receive working first and then proceed
to hook up transmit and a PTT circuit later (use COM1, it works
better ((doesn't key on reboot)) and requires no extra driver).
See AGW help file for a COM1 PTT circuit for later. If you can't
get receive working on any given software then there's no point.
Plus, this gets you going quickly.

I tuned my radio to the 144.39 APRS frequency and it works.
What's cool is when a station comes on screen; It is read out to
you and with a british accent to boot. I here it right now as I
type to you. Yes I'm online and the APRS radio link still works
as it should. Though, this will probably need to be turned off
for transmiting. It might go out with the packet audio.

Please, eveyone contribute what you learned on your particular
equipment.

P.S. I looked to Flexnet again and it's not ready for Winblows
98 yet according to their web page. So, I decided not to
configure it for DOS. I'm very good at DOS but simply do not
want to spend the time. Certainly not when the best Batch file
patterns (read: custom programing required) come from a friendly
thrid party tring to fill the gap. To each his own.

Just need some opinions on what is the best packet program. I have used
"KAGOLD" before and like it pretty good.
I'm currently using a unregistered version of KAWIN which is a windows
program only. Just need some opinions on these and maybe some that I haven't
mentioned.

Thanks Bobby KQ4GY

Subject: TNC-1 {Heath HD-4040}

I'm a newbie to APRS and wondering which software will work with my old
TNC-1 with or without the KISS ROM installed. I already have a DOS digi
program that seems to work fine. Is there anything else that supports
this old TNC? Thanks,

Steve
