If I remember correctly, Florida was unfortunate enough to have an FPAC
Packet network. That would go far in explaining a lack of activity. A look
at the FPAC web site a few months back showed me just how miserable those
folks are... They were petitioning the author of FPAC to include the ability
to lock out individual users, so they could play "Radio God".
There should also be some activity there from the SEDAN emergency
communications Packet net. If you can find the freq these folks are on, at
least then you will be dealing with real Hams, and not a bunch of lockout
lids who are all geeked out.
Also, be careful about who you talk to. An FPAC sysop, for example, will
tell you that all Packet activity is dead, while a SEDAN sysop will simply
welcome you to the network.
APRS is an interesting toy, and could potentially come in handy for storm
spotters, and that accounts for ten percent or so of APRS. The other 90% is
hype.
After several hours of watching little dots crawl around your screen, or
just sitting still as is often the case, you will begin to wonder where the
thrill of APRS is supposed to be.
"Hey, this little dot is ME!" Boy o Boy.
I'm not trying to run down APRS, by the way. I'm just trying to overcome the
hype and put it into perspective.

I'm located in NW Indiana, and there sure isn't much packet activity
around here either. There used to be 4 BBSes that I could reach
direct, but they're all closed down now. The reason.... few if any users.
My guess is that most of the former users are busy surfing the 'net.
The two systems which do seem to be holding their own are the
local DX PacketCluster and APRS (although most of the APRS
activity I've seen has been around the Chicago area, about 40
miles from here).

Hello Mike,
BBS's and keyboarding between ibndividuals has just about gone to zero in
Minnesota. I suspect that most of that activity has moved on to internet.
The biggest users of pcket now are the DX Clusters, APRS and emergency
communications. At the emergency simulations here in the modwest there is a
real shortage of mobile packet capability.
There are several Skywarn packet links, mainly between centers that have also
proved useful.
Lastly....
Satelittes still run digital modes and they are still fun.

Absolutely, Mir has been a blast to use but unfortunately the crew
shut the gear off before leaving for safety reasons.
Can't wait for the ISS!

I'm looking for firmware 6.0 or higher for a kpc-3. A company in Michigan
responded with an offer for a kpc-3 with a missing cover. I accidentaly
lost your e-mail message somehow before I had a chance to respond to find
out if a manual was available with the unit. Please re- email me if you
read this post again. 73, Mike, kd6hme leclaire@worldnet.att.net

I'm looking for firmware 6.0 or higher to upgrade a kpc-3 for gps
compatibility. A company in Michigan responded with a kpc-3 with 8.2
firmware but the case had no top because it was for lab use. Your e-mail
message was accidentally deleted before I could contact you for further
information. Please re-email me If you read this message again. Do you
have a manual?
