I was talking to some local Hams down here in Tampa & they tell me
Packet is just about dead in these parts. The new standard is APRS.
Can anyone shed light on this?
Thanks

Hi Mike,
It probably depends on the region of the country your in. Here in
S.E. N.Y. (FN31) there are a number of nodes running and a nearby
packet cluster but live qsos are long gone from here. Activity is
down a lot from 4 years ago. 4 years ago I could muster up a live
packet qso but not really anymore. Seems most folks aren't into packet
up here but a few of us die-hards. I still find packet useful and fun.
A local packet BBS sysop has been threatening to shut down due to lack
of activity on the system. Can't really blame him but I told him I'd
miss the heck out of it if he does shut it down.
APRS is picking up steam, mainly because it's graphical in nature
instead of just a bunch of text. APRS is neat but I find it tends to
get boring after a while. Not enough action in my area. Lots in NYC
but 60 miles north where I am it's quite. WA2YSM did set up a digi in
a primo spot up here with LARGE coverage which absolutely helps but
seems people in my area aren't into it.
We need more people into packet but it seems in my region most are
just into yaking on repeaters, which I'm not into. I love simplex.
73,
Tom

Hey Mike,
All I can comment on is the local activity. Local being the long running N7MMC
MSYS BBS here in Laramie, WY (Hey, it's even mentioned in the KPC3+ manual,
although just briefly). It's still up and running - but with only one VHF user
port now. Tom has been talking for about a year or so about just bagging the
whole thing and shutting down. Essentially there are NO local users via RF.
One or two that call in via modem - even those are connecting more and more
rarely. The 9k6 UHF port has been having problems and I get the feeling he's
not planning on fixing it. Only reason he's kept the system up this long is
there are several others that depend on him to forward to them. He's not one
to let someone hang. Even then, you get on and check the traffic and a
majority of it is either HTML or not in English. Pretty frustrating.
On the other hand, APRS is growing here. Two of us running regularly and
interest growing. A local I-gate is up and running and also West of us in
Rawlins. No activity yet in Cheyenne. Real plans should come to fruit soon for
a digi between Laramie and Cheyenne and a 2nd I-gate in Laramie. If you
followed activity on MIR for the bast 6 months or so, a lot of the packet
traffic there was APRS. Yup - APRS is the growing application for packet.

Cost?
Length of license period?
Difficulty of test? Very technical? I'm new to all this and just want
something to be able to use on vacations and such. No, I don't want FRS.
Cost?
Thanks
