I agree with the above statement being true (generally) for my area, Southern
California.

The AX.25 BBS System that we have here has declined, but those who remain do
remain for the purpose of emergency communication (and other reasons). The DX
Packetcluster is alive. APRS appears so popular that at a recent SCDCC
meeting, a casual question of whether or not a second APRS frequency was
needed
or would be useful was raised. TCP/IP via packet is alive too, but not well,
being that only about 40 of the 560+ stations are actually there and reachable
(some others are there but aren't 24/7 or have severe routing problems, but
most are closed/down).

We don't have "skywarn" here in California (but we don't usually have
tornadoes
or hurricanes either), and I am unfamiliar with satellite use via digital
modes
in my area.

Ok a little background info before I get flamed for asking a stupid
question. I have had my callsign for a few months. Most of that time I
have been using 2m packet bouncing through MIR (worked 17 states in my first
month) but now that the MIR station is no longer working I'm trying to find
a local packet network to interact with.

Ok now what I have already tried.

1> monitoring known packet freqs. I've found 2 DX clusters and 1 APRS
cluster but never can seem to find anybody using them.

2> asking other local hams. Well I have asked the other local hams I
know... none of which know anything about packet or anybody who does.

3> search the internet. Done this can't find a website talking about packet
in middle tn

So if anybody out there can hook me up with some info on packet in middle tn
it would be a big help.

Daniel, A GMRS license is very easy to get. There is no test, but you do need
to have a copy and read the regulations. The license fee is $75.00 for 5
years.
This will license two repeater pairs of your choice plus the 462.672/467.675
pair use by emergency monitoring groups like REACT. I suggest going to the
Personal Radio Steering Group web site at

http://www.provide.net/~prsg/

The cost will run $150 to $$175 for a new hand held radio. Check out the
Maxon
radio. They are available at discount from several mailorder companys. You
may find a good used radio for much less. Goodluck.
