Well, if I had the bucks, which I don't, I'd already be into the GRAPES stuff
linking my laptop to the internet through a private "gateway" for wireless
access. The "nationwide vendors" you mention building a wireless network
linking laptops to the internet are most likely NOT gonna be cheap.
I've been whining for years that cell phones would be nice if they had a
"simplex" unit-to-unit feature that would allow one to contact a passing
motorist with a problem (AKA "Smoky Reporte"), without having to know the
phone number of the other guy (simple simplex things like CB are still SO
handy sometimes in spite of their limitations). Then the cell vendors
come out with a "simplex feature".... that RECORDS such usage in its memory
and ADDS the airtime to your BILL next time you use the normal phone function.
ICK. Too bad **I** can't rob people like that...
Anyway, I would agree one of the few things Ham radio could be good for is
group or sole-efforts to provide lower cost wireless internet access.
And keeping it as commercial-free as possible is a hopeful way to keep it a
ham frequency....

It's already being done, it's legal and it works. The main users are RV'ers
and maritime mobile stations. Goto http://www.kis.net/kd3o/ and click on
Winlink Gateway. The people that set up these gateways are doing a great
thing for the mobile operators.
