 AWARDS -
WIA FEDERAL AWARDS MANAGER VK6LC Mal.

QNEWS: Federal Awards Program update, produced by Mal VK6LC.
Part 5. file name: QNEWS FAP-part5.mp3 length 1 min 59 sec.

Worked or Heard all VK Call Areas.

These awards with out a doubt is the most popular among VK and overseas
 Amateurs.

It can be achieved on H.F. and VHF and its an easy challenge to work
all of Australian States including the Antarctic region.

It's a very large colourful certificate that can also is shared with
 Short Wave Listeners as well.

On H.F. we need a total 73 variable contacts from all States, Territories
 including Antarctica.

For the VHF only 22 variable contacts from the same areas are required.

The big feature for this award is we honour extracts from your log book
only, no requirement to hold QSL cards.

Again we also feature progress updates, in AR Magazine several times a year.

We have updated this certificate as a face lift and added all Australian
 ACA VK9 prefixes as they
 are in 2003.

 The prefix areas are:
 VK9C Cocos Keeling Islands.
 VK9L Lord Howe Island.
 VK9M Mellish Reef.
 VK9N Norfolk Island.
 VK9R Rowley Shoals.
 VK9W Willis Islands.
 VK9X Xmas Island.

 P.O.Box. 196, Cannington. Western Australia. 6987.
 or via E-mail: awards@wia.org.au
or our W.I.A National website. http://www.wia.org.au

Stay tuned to QNEWS for next week our "VHF Century Club & Worked all
 States V.H.F awards".

This has been another Federal Awards update 2003.

This is Mal. VK6LC for QNEWS, in Perth.

THE QNEWS WORK BENCH - the nuts and volts report
 (Measure twice - Cut once!)

Watch your PSK31 signal in Europe

Do you want to see if your PSK-31 signal is being heard in Europe?
Well now you can without the need to call CQ or arrange a contact.

There is now a PSK-31 real time receiver in Germany, permanently tuned to
 14.070 MHz.
You simply log into the receiver's website and watch the display, which
shows all signals near that frequency. Just like with your PSK-31 receiving
software, you click on a yellow line and start decoding a signal.

Apart from doing test transmissions, we anticipate that the facility will
be useful for listeners who want to monitor amateur PSK.

The receiver used is a TS-450 and the antenna is a 20 metre longwire.

ARISS CONTACT WITH JAPANESE SCHOOL FIRST SINCE COLUMBIA TRAGEDY
Pupils at an elementary school in Japan have been the first youngsters to
speak to the astronauts aboard the International Space Station since the
 shuttle Columbia tragedy.

The contact took place between 8-N-3-H-E-S at the Hirano Elementary School
and astronaut Don Pettit, KD5MDT, at the controls of NA1SS.

The direct 2-meter contact was arranged by the Amateur Radio on the
International Space Station (ARISS) program, which has been on hold
 since the shuttle catastrophe.

We pick up the story from Amateur Radio NewsLine:-

" One of the first questions answered had to do with ecology.
How do you dump your garbage in space?

WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS --- SOTA

 John Linford g3wgv@aol.com

Summits on the Air (www.sota.org.uk) is an award scheme that
encourages HF and VHF portable operation from hilltops, much like
 IOTA does for islands.

It has proved very popular in the UK with many hilltops being
Activated some summits by more than one team in the day! Since it
started in March last year there have already been over 500 summit
activations - it has caught on really quickly (perhaps helped by the
 introduction of the FT817?).

In the UK there are qualifying summits all over the country so for most
people there is at least one nearby and they are not all huge mountains
so there is something that is possible for everyone.

The UK, South Africa and Ireland are climbing to new heights with this
one, so come on VKer's come on up! The scheme makes it easy to start up
