FRIEND OF VK4, VK2AXZ falls SILENT KEY
Les Daniels VK2AXZ passed away on Wednesday 29 January 2003 after
spending several weeks in the John Hunter Hospital.
Les was born at Minmi in 1925 and remained in the Newcastle area all
of his life.
Les was a long-standing member and solid supporter of Westlakes Amateur
Radio Club He was also an avid rag-chewer on the HF and VHF bands.
He had many interests apart from amateur radio.
Les was a keen fisherman, an accomplished golfer, a keen chess player,
and a talented artist. He surprised his friends, and perhaps himself,
when three years ago he married for the first time.
He often commented that his two best times in life had been his
early retirement and his marriage.
Our deepest condolences are extended to his widow, Rose.
A large contingent of relatives, friends and club members paid their
final respects to Les at the funeral service at Broadmeadow on
31 January 2003.
The old now-closed cemetery at Minmi is his last resting place.
It should be mentioned that Les left the entire contents of his
radio shack to Westlakes. Thank you Les.

Calculator Night Report - plus more!
There was barely room for everyone in the air-conditioned meeting room
during theTARCinc Radio Theory Class Calculator Night which happened
on Thursday February 13th.
Apart from regular class members there were also some club members
and harmonics wanting to brush up on the plastic brain operating
plus a new member of class who rolled up thanks to information flyers
posted at the local electronics shops.
Calculators ranged from the standard student scientific types,
one Reverse Polish Notation model plus one wag who used the "Teeny-Goooie"
program in a laptop computer.
The Master of Time and Space, Iain/VK4IGM put everyone through the
calculating paces, including a blast from the past with a few Slide Rules
but was dissapointed no one showed up with an abacus!
Everyone went away learning at least one new thing - which proves that
they aren't brain-dead !
The next class with specific theme will be -
the Multimeter Night, Thursday February 27th
Push your way in, Push your way over, where there is no
waiting, no delay! Wallaby Bob and Jeanette announce that
Ham n Eggs on The Strand will be happening from 7am to 10am, Sunday
March 2nd at the BBQs near the Strand Waterpark !
BYO chairs, cooking utensils, food, drink and appetite. Most importantly
BYO self!
World Scouting Jamboree in Thailand, will be talk at
theTARCinc Management Meeting on the 4th of March.
Steve VK4SGW will describe his experiences at the Jamboree in
helping run the RadioScouting facility - a ham station which by
all reports ran nearly 24 hours a day.
So... get to see Steve Watson / VK4SGW - our Federal Radio Scouting
Co-ordinator, at TARC Management Meeting 4th March.
