 AWARDS -
WIA FEDERAL AWARDS MANAGER VK6LC Mal.

QNEWS: Federal Awards Program update, produced by Mal VK6LC.
Part 4. file name: QNEWS FAP-part4.mp3 length 3 min 10 sec.

 W.I.A. Grid Square award.
This one is a real technical one but not difficult and would suit many
persons that enjoy to pin point and locate "map-wise" the station worked.

H.F. Portable and QRP stations have fun with this one including VHF- UHF
 operators.

The World including VK is divided up into many of thousands of metric grid
squares and you can accurately locate your contact or friend, similar to
a land survey map or marine chart.

Many Hams today have their Grid Square location printed on their QSL cards
and its handy to have your own Grid square at the ready. Also it's a
very popular award in Europe, Japan and North America.

This is another method to give you direct distance between station
 locations.

Hard copy reference books or for the computer persons software programs
are available for easy tracking and logging.

It was only the other day I supplied some Grid Square locations to a group
that were to set a "Fox".

Did you really know what the grid square reference would be for the
City Hall in Brisbane? Yes, QG62mm. This in normal language equates to
 27 deg, 28min, South. 153 degrees, 01min, East.

One of the main tools I use for checking these awards is the DxAtlas,
a computer program that is set up for grid square locating, and it shows
the whole world in very fine details. This can be found on
 http://www.dxatlas.com/
Alternatively a hard copy reference book is available from ARRL, titled
"the ARRL World Grid Locator Atlas".
We also feature progress updates, in our AR. Magazine several times a year.

This broadcast has only covered the basic details.

Further information can be requested from the Federal Awards Manager:

 P.O.Box. 196, Cannington. Western Australia. 6987.
 or via Email: awards@wia.org.au
or our W.I.A National website. http://www.wia.org.au

Stay tuned to QNEWS for next week our "WAVKCA awards", this has been
 another Federal Awards update 2003.

This is Mal. VK6LC for QNEWS, in Perth.

UNITED STATES - W - HAM RADIO IN TV DOCUMENTARY
Ham radio is part of a soon to be shown documentary produced for the
Discovery Channel. Joe Moell, K0OV, has the details:

Members of the Hospital Disaster Support Communications System of
Orange County, California have been included in tapeings for a new
documentary series on the Discovery Channel. "Critical Rescue," a
series of programs featuring rescue workers and those who support
 them.

A team from New Dominion Pictures spent a half-day with HDSCS last
August. They interviewed founder and leader April Moell, WA6OPS, and
taped reenactments of ham communications that took place on April 23,
 when a 6000-ton mile-long freight train struck a standing
Metrolink double-decker commuter train at a crossing in Placentia,
causing three deaths and over 200 injuries. The drill was
immediately cancelled, and as rescuers converged on the train crash
scene, area hospitals braced for the wounded passengers.

As Net Control, WA6OPS quickly deployed hams to the 14 hospitals most
likely to receive victims. There they handled countless messages,
verifying victim dispatch and patient counts, providing information
for inquiring victim families, and communicating with hams supporting
the Red Cross. Within some hospitals, HDSCS provided direct links to
handle messages between triage areas, Emergency Departments, and
 Command Posts.

From southern California, this is Joe Moell K-zero-Oscar-Victor for
Amateur Radio Newsline rebroadcast through QNEWS to the WIA.

We'd appreciate it if repeater managers would send the call sign, frequency,
location, and sponsoring club/organisation of the repeater as well as the
time and day QNEWS is aired to Graham VK4BB, qnews@wia.org.au each week.
Or by packet to qnews @ VK4WIE.#BNE.QLD.AUS.OC

G3AQC's Signals are Heard in Alaska - on 136kHz
Reaching Alaska from the UK using just one watt ERP is quite a feat for
any band, but Laurie Mayhead, G3AQC, has just achieved this on the
 136kHz band.

In the early hours of the 15th of February he transmitted
to KL1X in Anchorage, and just before UK dawn at 0615 his callsign was
 clearly identified.

G3AQC was using QRSS - very slow CW - with a 60-second dot period.

The distance was 7278 kilometres, a record for one watt ERP on 136kHz.

KL1X said, "What is more surprising than the distance is that the path
is notoriously poor between south-east Alaska, on the east coast of the
 Pacific, and Europe.
The signal would theoretically go on a great circle route to nearly
80 degrees north, over the northern Canadian Arctic, northern Greenland,
east of Iceland, Glasgow, then over the UK to the South Coast - across
 and through the Auroral oval.
There are some thoughts that the actual path might have
gone round or even under the Auroral zone as no Auroral Doppler was seen
 on the received signal."

A lot of research and preparation work were carried out by G3NYK, G3LDO,
W3EEE and W4DEX, which helped to set this new record.
