No need Walt we all have gereators in FLorida now, after last year.

FEMA BOUGHT literally thousands of them for people
here using your tax dollars (the same dollars that buy many
of the Winlink modems!)

I know a number of WELL-OFF people that got a free generator.
They didn't publicize it well, but anyone that bought a generator
after being without electric mains power for more than 3 or 4 days
could apply to FEMA and get reimbursed a fixed sum, that in some
cases was higher than the price they had paid!

I have a generator here and would not be stuck with battery power
even if the power was off for a long time. The gas stations might
eventually let us down, but by then the cell phone cmpanies would
be back up.

Times have changed. Amateur radio has the appearance of a lot of
activity connected to emergencies, but a lot of it isn't needed.

It's nice that hams volunteer to answer phones, direct traffic and
run errands for the government employees, but those are
some of their main kinds of activities these days.

Don't forget Walk-a-thons. But you don't need 1400 baud for that
either.
