Hi Bob and all,

You're going to keep me running after the subject until I run out of
titles. (;->) Electrification of the metro lines makes sense, just build
more windmills. (I just couldn't resist!) In town it makes ultimate sense
underground or not, more pollution you don't need. Here that scheme began
in the early 1900s when tramways and subways were built on a much larger
scale and steam became impractical. Later in the 1930s major railroads
into New York were electrified for the same reason, the stations were
entirely rebuilt. You can easily read the history of Grand Central
Terminal and Penn Station on line, you'll find it quite interesting
especially Grand Central's little "secrets". I'll just mention the clock
and "whispering room" to pique your curiosity. For what it's worth 25KV
AC seems to becoming the world standard replacing a wide variety of other
systems but in Europe it's slow considering the number of systems in use
and expenses.

I heard something about incresed speed but not necissarily on narrow gage
so maybe you should check on that. Tilting MUs give a much better ride at
higher speeds but I've not heard of other than standard gage, to me it
would seem narrow wouldn't stand the lateral forces but we could both be
wrong. We're just guessing and I haven't heard anything about it so maybe
you could find out. Oh, a few weeks ago I saw one of NJT's new double
decker coaches sitting in the yard at Long Branch, I have no idea what
that lonely orphan was doing there. They're the coming thing, I see them
in service on most of the metro lines and with rising ridership due to
increased cost of gasoline for cars we're really going to need them. The
other day on the news I heard it's up over 40% in the New York metro
area, not surprising.

Hmmm, I just remembered an amusing comment one of my "girlfriend"
conductors made a while back; "I like riding under catenary, I just LOVE
high voltage!" Nah, I just chuckled and kept my comment to myself. (;->)
