Yes Warren, the metropolitan lines are all electric including the Perth to
mandurah section. Mandurah is WA's second largest city and is outside the
Metropolitan area. Here is a segment from a website of TransPerth giving
technical details.::

>Electrical substations have been constructed at Jandakot and Karnup to convert the 132kV supply to
the 25kV needed for the trains. Electrification of the line began in March
2006 and involved providing over 140km of high voltage cable along the
length of the route, installing signals and ultimately powering the
substations.>

I know nothing little about the railway systems in the other states. Apart
from the Metropolitan and Mandurah lines the other railways in this state
are diesel powered - some are diesel-electric. The suburban train I
travelled on in Sydney was certainly electric. It goes under the city and
so electricity is the only real option uless they install expensive
ventilation systems so they can use diesel - not likely in these days of
the need for clean power.

Incidentally the new lines are still NG, but the standard of the track is
so much improved that high speeds can be maintained.I will check on that
statement but I think it is correct. A third rail is used for the
Transcontinental and the Kalgoorlie Prospector.
