That is true, the narrow gauge days are slowly disappearing. I am not sure
what the new Mandurah line is but as it fits into the NG system of the
Metro Area I guess it is NG. The Eastern Goldfields line to Kalgoorlie is
dual gauge with a third rail while the Kalgoorlie to Esperance line is
standard gauge as also are the new iron ore lines in the north.
Incidentally a new mine has been opened 100+ km east of Mt Newman and
according to a news item tonight they have also built an iron ore line to
Port Hedland which is rapidly becoming a very large and important port.
The NG lines in the metro area have been upgraded to allow for a faster
service and I think I read somewhere that the old maximum speed allowed of
45 mph has been upgraded to 100 kph or about 60 mph.The metro lines are
all electric now of course.
One of the politicians promised a reinstatement of the Great Southern's
Albany Express before a state election some years back. They won the
election and then this polly told us that as Albany had not returned his
candidate he considered we did not want the express to be reinstated and
so it would not go ahead. They got booted out at the next election.
Democracy at work in Western Australia. You do your job or out you go Mr
Politician.
Cheers,
Bob VK6BE.
