Hi Bob AND ALL,
I know you know... you know? Er, do you think maybe some who are reading
this don't know what you know? Now calm down and feed your spider.
I mentioned PRE WAR Germany and the mess they faced after WW1 and the
Depression that followed being they were perhaps the hardest hit and make
the best example. Hmmmm, just something perhaps woth mentioning were the
hoarders. When my aunt and uncle in Pennsylvania passed away and the
house being prepped for sale we found bars of soap blackened with age and
canned goods bearing labels from the 1930s. They're collectors items but
dad never understood the value of old stuff and threw out things worth a
small fortune over the years. Oh well.
I tend to fall asleep at the worst times and haven't parsed the fan pages
and historical sites yet but I'll get around to it eventually. I'm really
curious to catch up to that article I read on the Old Ghan and the narrow
gage lines but with my luck I'll not find it again. On the other hand the
next time I download e-mail I'll likely find another dozen scanned pages
froma book on the early days of the SAR when it was NG steam running
Bayer Peacock engines and a couple of Baldwins they decorated with
Peacock feathers. Whomever did it should have been shot, the classic
lines of the Old West like what you see in the movies were ruined. Well,
at least BHPIO preserved a South African Bayer Garratt in working order
and didn't turn it into something you'd have seen at St. Pancras London.
Somebody in the UK will probably be angry with me for calling it St.
Pancreas... TOUGH! (;->)
So what they're leaving the old NG lines to rust? Australia hasn't lost
sight of the nationwide British Standard conversion, eventually broad
gage will go bye bye too. When the rolling stock reaches the end of it's
service life that third rail will disappear into railroad history. Don't
worry, chances are some here and there will be preserved for fans and
tourists just like the NG has been and there's NOTHING that thrills
better than that chugging sound and the smell of steam and coal smoke. I
sure wish I could travel to the UK for one of their LNER galas, I would
LOVE to see one of those A-4 Pacific Class "Mallards" up close and
personal! Oh no, while York would be on the agenda and I'd make a point
of seeing the Winston Churchill I wouldn't want to miss the Union of
South Africa or the Green Arrow running at track speed.
Hmmm, too bad that feller who wrote the STEAM bulls quit a while back. I
seldom had much to say but I sure loved reading them, he got me
interested in the Castle Class and I just dove into British steam with
both feet in the firebox. Never mind the blisters.
