When I read the following news report it made me ask the following question,
"What is the idea of this?" I can understand it up to a point, with making the
technology do the work and the reason for robots to visit in-hospitable
environments like the moon and Mars etc, but why put so much effect into
basically replacing the HUMAN car driver?? This baffles me a bit, there
are millions of people around and there will always be drivers, so why
can't they drive their own cars.
I can understand making cars safer, but to get rid of the driver seems
illogical except if your for the technology that is advancing to achieve it.
It would be interesting to read other opinions on this path to removing the poor
human driver, I myself like to drive, and enjoy a day out in the country in the car
with dog, kids, picnic, etc.... and of course a Radio!!

Caroline is a 2006 Volkswagen Passat, converted by a team from the Braunschweig
University of Technology to be an autonomous vehicle.
The car was a finalist in the legendary Darpa Grand Challenge, a US Defence
Department-sponsored competition held every year or two in which driverless
vehicles battle it out to see which can complete a set course in the fastest time.
The cars must drive themselves they cannot be steered by remote control.
Although Caroline came seventh out of the 11 finalists, it must be said that it
did not successfully complete the course.
