David commented on the useage fof fuel despite better performance of engines.

This is known as Jeavon's Paradox which can be applied to any system where
efficiency is improved but what usually happens is consumption goes up
instead of down.

It just seems that people will if enrgy becomes cheaper through better
efficiency they will drive more, or run their air conditioner at lower
temperatures and so have a negative effect than what was expected.

Hence the improvement in petrol consumption in the US led to the massive
sales of four wheel drive vehicles.
