Rear wheel drive is why the Ford and Holden Commodore are so popular.
This is in line with BMW and Mercedes etc and have far superior
towing capability, than a front wheel drive car.
Towing a boat up a slippery ramp is one instance, where rear wheel
drive wins out!
I think Mitsubishi and Toyota are burying their heads in the sand,
try to compete with the rear wheel drive, big Aussie cars. Sales of
their big ones are next to nothing and Mitsubishi have had to have
millions of dollars of Government assistance to keep their factory
here going. They are selling far more 4 wheel drive cars to
illustrate a point
I agree that a big engine car, can have almost equal fuel economy on
long trips, as small to medium cars. I think mathematically it is
weight over distance and the big engine does not labor and on climbs
and spit out partially unburnt fuel.
Many small car owners carry similar loads to the large car, cramming
wife plus a couple of kids and their luggage in and on the long trips.
This must lead to greater wear on tyres and incur earlier major
repairs.
