"Low fuel economy"? I bought a 2 L car once to replace my 4 litre Ford,
David. I thought my fuel costs would go down. They didn't. The fuel
consumption was exactly the same. I have gone back to Ford Falcons which
are economical and reliable. A friend of mine has a 3.9 litre Camry. He
told me he used 13 litres per 100 km on a trip to Perth (410 km). I do
better than that on gas which is 10% less efficient than petrol.
The story that owning a small car will result in lower running costs is
not necessarily true. It depends on many factors. Dave's remarks about
fuel guzzlers is only partly true.He may have been speaking of the large
4WDs of course, not the pasenger cars available here..
Very many Australians are fond of caravanning when they go on holidays. In
this country there are streams of vehicles pulling caravans round
Australia or to favourite holiday places. How do you do that with a small
car? You don't unless you use a camper or similar small trailer. A large %
of those pulling vans now use 4WDs.
Comparing the Commodore with the Falcon, there is not much to separate the
two. They each appear to have their supporters. Last time I got prices the
Ford was slightly cheaper and had a slightly bigger engine. Fuel economy
was slightly better in the Commodore (about 35 mpg on a long run, but Ford
Falcon gets near that too. As far as availability and cheapness of parts i
and repairs is concerned both the Australian cars leave the others for
dead.Toyota is also Australian made and overall has the biggest sales, but
that is mainly through its wide range of vehicles including 4WDS.
