Those gas producers were widely used in this state during the war when
petrol was rationed. Those used in my state were developed by a man called
Pederick in a rural town (Wagin) West Australia. They burned charcoal
which produced gas. They were not particularly efficient - on a very steep
hill you may have had to switch back to petrol but running costs were
certainly cheap. They were not a permanent slution to the petrol crisis
though as they were dirty, messy and heavy. They were usually mounted on
the back of the car. The charcoal (coke) used was produced from wandu
(white gum), a native West Australian tree.
