Hello
That should bring some sort of response...Bob. Wait and
wait.
So , I thought , I write a piece of the South African motor
car scene,, an essay...or if you like : more of the ol
rubbish...
A car here , is more an essential , a tool then anywhere
else. Distances are great - not the one like in OZ from town
to town ...but in commuting. Bus service is still...just a
touch better of nonexistend , and the railways are trying
their best, but when due to a power outage, 7 coaches are
burnt - down and out - so that 2 lines from and to Pretoria
had to be closed, there is little else to fall down to.
Shure ...motorbikes, bikes ,dogs and sleds...Have you seen
one of the summer downpours here? Bikes , no way.
In winter...maybe... but then . The whole of the
family...supply, going to the cinema or else.
New units sales have gone down due to new regulations in
credit.
Its been so good here...about 45 thousand new vwhicles in
the center of SA per month alone. Dropping sharply now.
The Greenhouse and Peak effects...well. that could be
discussed in annother 100Mb bulletin...
We are awaiting the supply of the new - cheapcheap - Indian
or whatever make cars.
As , probably anywhere, you can see a multitude of makes and
conditions of cars on the road. Starting from "Garbage on
Wheels" which is merely not probable in other countries, to
Rolls Royce or eqiv with build in Credit card facility and
Vault. Its amazing how many rich people can live off the
poor and get away with it. But thats annother repair issue.
Our taxis , which take the brunt of the load for the
erm...lower class commuters, have in their toolbox a tube or
two of "Superglue" = Meant literally and true!
But - whatever - foremost in the regular mind of any
Citizen - is the Car, any! A showpiece and demonstration
modell. Here as , maybe still in Germany , one is judged by
your wheels.
Brains are/is a NO contender. IF you can afford , a Ford or
have annother forthnight to pay...that is.
Part prices are high , there is a great incentive to
...erm...supply erm ...generic parts. E.G. whichever fits
first.
Petrol costs are increasing...maybe slower than elsewhere
but steadily.
Traffic on our main arteries are, as the doctors subscribes
: Slow, high pressured, lined with plaque and
hardened...with other words...Dinosours 2 , or three or...
One giant leap at a morning or two and then studying the
reroutes again...Half a mile here . A quarter mile there...
IF you want it in steno : You Do need a Car here. Is not
gonna be cheap. Even more so the insurance. Petrol will cost
you your limbs. Servicing it will cost you your carcass.
(But who would want that?) SO , CARS :
Any make , any made , any year...IF! youre rich.., NO
problem. If youre ...well off, youre NO more... If youre
poor , youll stay so. Period.
Petrol Peak? Looking at our roads : NEW and MANY new Car
sales parlours sprouting up everywhere...its not gonna
happen in the next 50 to 60 years. For shure. According to
the Sales persons/ideology.
Your reasoning will tell you ...maybe tomorrow? Next week?

If you ask me about "Autogas" here , I could crack a few
jokes...nothing for packet ,so. Bob should know...
I have driven my share in this world already. I would love
to live in a small town , within walking distance of the
shops, PO office and doctors...and such. That would give me
the exercise needed. "lectronics", like thew web and Packet
here would be filling my intell...hey...probably not packet,
so strike that off.
It might be not in line with your thinking, but my last car
will be a hearse. And if is just two horses, thats fine with
me!
