Actually, Dave the new Commodores and the Ford Falcons do up to 35 mpg on
a long trip - around 9 l per 100 or less on a good run. My friend has a
Toyota Vienta about three years old. He boasted to me that he uses 13L per
100 km on a trip to Perth. I have a 4 L Falcon which uses 13 l per 100 km
running on LPG and much less than that on petrol.
The fact is that Australia's big cars are surprisingly economical. If you
wish, as I did, to pull a boat and trailer or a caravan over any distance
(which I still want to do) any of the small and supposedly economical cars
are almost useless.
To go on a good holiday here I need to go to Carnarvon which is 1361 kn
north of here. Broome, another favourite holiday spot, is 2845 km away. A
trip like that needs more than a very small car expecially if you are
twoing a caravan. You people in NSW don't have anything like those
distances to cover to holiday places unless you want to go interstate.
The big fuel guzzlers are the big 4WDs which are found in increasing
numbers on our roads, not the petrol or LPG fuelled cars..
Cheers,
