Hi Pete and lurkers,
It is MDI that manufactures a line of air powered cars, the Tata among
them. It is slated for India apparently because it doesn't meet safety
standards elsewhere. The US is one I know for sure which is why another
model will be introduced here.
The first I heard of Wankel was when his rotary got a write-up in Popular
Mechanics back in the '60s and was praised for it's simplicity and
vibration free performance. The Mazda rotary was NOT a Wankel but was
based on the idea, if you don't consider it a mechanic's nightmare you've
never tried to work on one or spoken to a mechanic who had.I remember
GM's attempt to build a "better" one but gave up for reason's stated
above, goes back to a simple rule; if it ain't broke don't try to fix it.
Never mind advertizing, experience wins every time.
Better German engineering? The VW Beetle was a Porche! Don
t argue, go back and read history about Hitler commissioning him to build
a "people car". It became popular with the younger generation having less
money to spend so it fit their needs quite nicely but my third hand
experience told me it had some nasty flaws except for the engine that was
very reliable. That's the usual money pit so avoiding that is half the
battle. Raid cans? Didn't see any here south of the border.
Oh before I forget the VW Microbus was even cheaper to operate. It ran on
flower power.
