Hi Bob and others.
When I began school we had just changed from the ONC/HNC which my father
took to 'O' = Ordinary Levels at 16 and 'A' = Advanced levels between 16 &
18 (could be 20 if you failed Uni entrance).
'O' levels were replaced in the 1970s with the GCSE= General Cert of
Secondary Education. Also, Tertiary education was funded by grants, Unlike
now when kids have to pay. There is a lot of argument about the cost of
University loans right now as they are being increased.
My own personal view is that the 'Hard' subjects at Uni should be funded
by frants as they were in the old days but that, what are now referred to
as 'Mickey Mouse' degrees, i.e. degrees in subjects with no real use which
used to be covered by trade exams, should be paid for e.g. one of my
exams, Radio, TV and Electronic Engineering is a subject which used to be
taken at night school while working and earned a C&G = The City and Guilds
of London Institute, intermediate and final certificates. I don't care
that it isn't a degree. it was tough and I am proud of it.
By 'Hard' subjects I mean Law,Medicine,Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Maths
all the subjects which we need as a country. I'm sure you realise that and
could add some more to them.
In the 1990s Our government seemed to try to imitate the American system.
As for your state and the Matric, it sounds like my father's exam which
was much tougher than my 'A' levels, you had to pass a group of subjects
in one exam and even the handwriting was marked-very tough!
I think I hear a frog approaching.......
