Here's a thought on Yankee Cars, Warren. The first thing I thought when,
as a 15 yr old, I slid behind the wheel of that US Ford was all about the
sheer length of the front, bench seat and how I, at 6 ft 2" could lie down
on it with room either end.

I won't go into details, they would be banned on packet, but it did make
me jealous of American teenagers.

Even the Rolls Royces with their twin bucket (more like armchair) seats,
just couldn't compete with that !

As for spped, about that time we had no speed limits, except for 30mph
(50kph) in towns, on the Motorways it was drive as fast as you like but
very few cars back then would exceed 70mph (120kph).

However, in 1966 a Cobra 727 was clocked doing 183 mph (CA 300 kph) quite
safely along the M1, it upset the powers that be. Never mind that the
Cobra cost more than a nice house as did other fast cars like the Aston
Martin DB5 and the Jaguar XK140.

Very rapidly, 70 mph speed limit signs appeared on major roads and
motorways. Funny how fast a government can act when introducing a law.

These were followed by all sorts of speed limits, differing for different
vehicles on all kinds of roads. The main road max for a car is now 60mph
but motorways remain at 70 mph which, as I explained in a previous bull,
seems to get ignored by an enormous number of motorists, judging by the
people who pass me while creeping along at 70 in the centre lane while
they do 80+ mph in th outer lane.

As I have always thought more about mpg than mph, I will continue to stick
tp the max limit=> 50mpg in most cars.

See you an the flip side gud buddie.
