Hi Ian and all,
Now that I have stopped laughing and can type reasonably straight here's
my thoughts on the matter. As far as I know we use animal dung for farm
fertilizer rather than a source of methane, that comes from capped
landfills. I've seen it in action, the top of the mound (and it's huge)
is covered with pipes, a collection manifold and eventually the gas finds
its way to a modified petrol engine spinning a generator. The electricity
is back fed into the grid, usually 4800V 3 phase from the average
landfill. That BTW is as close as you can get to light industrial and
residential customers since local 600A trios are the neighborhood primary
lines.
Just to add a little something, oil refineries and other large waste gas
producers don't burn it off anymore, it's used to fire boilers that
provide heat to the distillation and cracking towers PLUS what's left
over spins turbines generating electricity for the refinery. Of course
when all is said and done there is plenty of surplus juice back fed into
the HV distribution lines, consumers turned providers.
OK, back to the sh** and the BBC. After all that would YOU go back for
more??? Ugh, one turn around the poo pile is quite enough for me after
smelling Ohio in springtime. Pig crap mixed with water sprayed on fields
from Cleveland to Dayton and beyond can gag a maggot so I would imagine
the flies are hiding someplace until the stink dissipates enough so birds
stop falling from the skies and eating them between gasps.
Oh don't get the Swedes mixed up in this sh***y mess, I'm sure they have
better things to do. Eh, it all comes down to a "digester" which
essentially is a large, closed vessel where poo mixed with water goes in
(rather than stinking up Cleveland) with methane coming off the top
leaving sludge to be disposed of one way or another, usually by workers
dressed in Class 4 hazmat suits with closed breathing apparatus.
There are 1,001 ways you can use the word sh** and I'm sure you can come
up with enough to keep you busy for a week.
Meanwhile down on the farm they're shoveling poo
Boots all covered in sticky goo
They make life better for me and you
But I don't think Mike Rowe likes it very much.
