Hi Ian, Bill and all,

Now my curiosity is really piqued, I'm sure that heat pump wasn't
installed just to please the greenies. Since it's an air conditioner
running reverse cycle to provide heat in winter I'm reasonably sure the
primary purpose is air conditioning in summer. There are all kinds of
schools and gymnasiums used for sporting events year round so frankly
that's what I'd like to learn about.

Yes Ian, although heat pumps more often use the Earth as a resivoir (coal
mines aren't always handy, hi) an AC unit can work both ways, the pump
doesn't always have to employ "liquid cooling". When it comes to
efficiency things can get deceptive as manipulated figures often do. The
really big question is which efficiency is being rated, that of the unit
itself (usually rather good) or overall energy efficiency (usually pretty
dismal). There is so much waste in energy conversion you'd be surprised
how little actually benefits the end user and this sort of measurement is
all important when it comes to the laws of thermodynamics actually
working in our favor or to our detriment.
