This is more to Warren.
He said, as an afterthought:

Pete has mentioned about cars having gasbags on the roof during WW II.
The idea resurfaced during the fuel shortage of the early 70s.
Some farmers used bags full of methane produced from chicken dung - thats
a lot worse than dog exhaust. I shovelled enough as a boy to never want to
do it.
About the same time the Swedes built a power station running on excreta.
The BBC did an interview with the manager and were trying their best to
avoid letting him use the word "sh*t". He realised what was happening and,
being an excellent English speaker, tried to use the word as much as
possible. They never did say just what type of sh.. they were using but I
presume it was amixture of farm and town, much like gas. The BBC never
went back and I have heard no more of the project. Perhaps we have some
Swedes on here who can enlighten me.
When I think of the sheer size of American cars compared to European and
the huge amount of BS over there, it does seem an excellent project for
Yankee Greenies.
