First I must apolgise for letting that bulletin escape without checking it.
I had had some difficulty with a couple of attempts, but got interupted on the
last one, and when I looked it had gone and I could not chase it.
Anyway the atricle was worth reading, even though I do not expect to see it
come to pass. Hmmm, I don't know whether to hope I will be around or not !

Re the hydrogen busses. As I mentioned here a while back my son's father in law
was the managing director of a British bus and fire engine manufacturer and was
on a British governement committee looking at alternative fuels for public
transport and similar vehicles. I met him again in Melbourne over Christmas as
we usually do each year at my son's home.
I asked again about the hydrogen busses but the news has not got any better for
fuel cells.
Mercedes Benz has put a lot of money and effort into hydrogen fuel cell busses
but they have still not been able to get an economic lifetime out of them.

Bob, are the busses in Perth Meredes ?
Until the lifetime of the fuel cells can be improved they will be a money pit.
The fundermental problem with hydrogen vehicles, or any hydrogen machine is the
source of the hydrogen. It is made either by electrolosys or from hydrocarbons
such as as oil or natural gas.
Aside from that difficulty there is the matter of ERoEI, Energy returned on
energy invested.
It fails dismally from that point of view, achieving a 1.2:1 to as bad as .75:1.
Not a viable propersition.

Yes, despite what many say or wish we will be burning coal and gas for some
time yet.
However, coal does not have the time left that many think.
Coal comes in many grades and naturally all the best grades have already been
mined.
Peak coal is expected around 2025 to 2030. Unfortunately that is a figure based
on no increase in use. If there is a big swing from oil to coal then coal will
have supply difficulties much sooner. Switching cars from petrol to electricity
will burn up coal quicker also.

Just think of these dates:
Oil production starts 1855 approx.
Year of most oil found in a year 1964
First year that oil discovery was less than produced 1983
US Oil production peak 1970
UK North Sea oil production peak 1999
Australia oil production peak 2000
World crude oil production peak 2005
Peak of crude oil plus all liquids production 2008
Great Financial Crash 2008
Today we use each year five times the amount we discover in a year

Something has to give !
