Barry, the Murdoch University report into the cost benefit relationship in
the present trials is found at http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/alt_CBA.pdf.
There are three main manufacturers, Daimler (Mercedes),Thor and Irisbus.
Thor is the one used in the USA where there are also trials going on. The
Perth buses use the conventional diesel bus converted for CNG or
hydrogen. The hydrogen is generated in a fuel cell not from LNG or coal.
It appears that there is some prospect of success somewhere along the line
but at present the fuel cell hydrogen vehicle is expensive to convert and
run. Perth is not alone in these trials which are taking place in many
countries including the USA. It seems that there is prospect of success
or I would think the trials would have been abandoned already instead of
expanding as they are at present..We are getting into new country as the
motor manufacturers did when motor cars were first built. Only the rich
could afford to buy one. How that has changed!! Now everyone can buy one.
One of the chief problems of cost in the report is that the technology is
being used in a limited manner which makes it more expensive than it is
likely to be when the technology is more widely used.
We cannot predict what the future will bring. So many have tried to do so
and failed.
I am not going to condemn the concept until there had been a fair trial
and anyone who does condemn it at this stage risks being wrong as has
happened so many times in the past.
BTW Austalian oil is far from finished. The Rough Range site where the
first discovery of oil in WA was made is being reopened with an offshore
rig. The reserves of natural gas in our northwest are almost unlimited.
Coal is not finished either there is coal in this state in places south
and east of Collie with Margaret River to be opened up if environmental
approval is given. Walpole on the south coast has reserves of brown coal
at the surface but I doubt if this will ever be mined because of
environmental restrictions.
Cheers,
Bob VK6BE.
