Hi Everyone,
Here's hoping that someone out there can help. I have an electric motor
that did'nt work when I got it. On opening the case to check the windings
etc., the end fell off pulling the badly made connections with it.

Now I had a problem. Knowing very little about these animals, I first
checked the windings and replaced the tattered connecting wires. They seem
OK with no short circuits to earth.

There are two windings. One has a slightly higher resistance than the
other (in the region of a few ohms.)

The motor has a centrifugal switch which I presumed was to disconnect the
starter windings once the motor reached operating speed.

I wired the beast up using one end of each winding as a common to which I
attached the power line (Brown)

The other end of what I was advised would be the "RUN" winding is
connected to the neutral (Blue). This had the HIGHER resistance.

The Remaining winding wire is now attached to the centrifugal switch. The
other switch connection to the neutral line. This winding had LOWER
resistance and was told this is the START winding.

Standing well back from the possible explosion, I switched on and was
astonished to see the thing purr into life and run as smoothly as new.

Now comes the complication ! This old thing has a very large (Size)
capacitor attached to its side. The wires were ripped out of the tin can
it was enclosed in. I opened the can (Carefully) and replaced the wires
resealing the can afterwards. It works OK (My quivering hand verified
that).   But can anyone tell me;

 1) If the wiring is to the correct windings ( I have not tried the motor
    under load yet)
 2) Where was the Capacitor connected and why ?

I know the Ham fraternity is all knowing, Its just to find the one who
knows this type of animal. Any input will be appreciated.
