Well some of what you said might hold water, Warren, but some would not.
For starters the oil gas companies on the NW shelf in this state are
mainly old established Australian firms who have to look to the future for
their very existence. WA Petroleum made the first discovery of oil in this
country and they are still going nearly 60 years later. Rough Range was
theirs and it sent Cable Oil shares up through the roof, from 1 pound to
100 pounds overnight. . There are wells up there which are capped and will
be available in the future.

We had a Prime Minister named Frazer who had a brilliant idea of putting a
high excise on all oil products including those from Australian resources
and so the local product had no price advantage over what we bring in from
overseas. I don't know what proportion of our oil supplies are still
locally produced but I do know that the excise put on all fuel supplies is
something like 50%. The Howard Government did cap the excise and remove
the CPI rises so that excise does not increase, the GST is fixed at
10%..

As for petrol tankers, virtually ALL our petrol is moved by tanker in this
state though some tankers may still be on the rail; I haven't seen any
here since the local fuel depot at the port closed.

You are right about the accidents with tankers, there have been virtually
none in this state where the longest distances are travelled - road
trains, private cars, trucks carrying freight - yes - fuel tankers - no.

Warren, enjoy your fuel prices. Compared to ours you are giving the stuff
away. I saw some figures of Peter's - motion lotion he calls it. Compare
with ours here in this city at $1.30 a litre, LPG 81.9 c.p.l. I use LPG
as I said before. In Perth petrol is around $1.12 a litre and LPG 60c.
There are wide flustuations in price of both petrol and LPG in Perth where
the oil companies play silly games with the consumers. Figures.

As for hydrogen as fuel I can only repeat what I said before - the fat
lady has not sung yet and until she does we can only guess at the future.
The issue is still under trial.

Remember Malthus? Expert economist who made a prediction for the future?
He turned out to have overlooked some small thing and was proved to be
wrong. Man is not infallible even when he is an expert. We have to wait and
see.

Cheers,
Bob VK6BE.
P.S. Yes I remember the tortoise and the hare but the relevance to this
discussion escapes me, Warren. Ribbit! Oops! Nearly typed rabbit!

Yeah, the CNG people "need" to get their investment back quickly. Where
have I heard THAT one before? Sounds like a loud chorus of many voices to
me, they all want to turn a quick and greedy buck and to hell with the
future. Remember the tortoise and the hare? 'Nuff said.
