As Sewell is a well know technotard he probably got epicyclic wrong and
refused to be corrected. The Daimlers of the period used a 4 speed
pre-selector gearbox. The gear selector control was used to energise
different solenoids, the solenoids were used to control clutch bands on a
standard 4 speed epicyclic gear box.
If you have ever been on a Leylan Atlantean bus you will have seen the
minute gear control on the dashboard for the epicyclic gearbox looking like
a miniature gearlever.
