This must be what I suspected it tp be. I too have never heard of a
'spycyolic' gearbox but I have heard of an epicyclic gearbox, in fact my
father had a daimler with one in the 1950s. It also had a 'fluid flywheel'
transmission, a type of semi automatic gearbox operated by brakebands
which
clamped around the drum containing the epicyclic gear tran you wanted.

You preselected which gear you wanted in advance, then, when you wanted
that gear, you depressed the 'gear change pedal' which was in the position
where the clutch would be in a normal car.

With a light load it was possible to leave it in 3rd and drive it on the
fluid flywheel alone like anormal automatic.

Maybe someone has 'borrowed' the epicyclic gearbox and altered it then
renamed it but for what it's worth, that's what I remember.

The drawbacks with the Daimler were 1. It was no use for rapid gear
changes and 2. it tended to wear the brakebands quite rapidly. Very messy.
I did help to repair it on several occasions and it was part of what put
me off repairing cars for life,

I hope the above is of some use.
