What they actually use is Methanol. It does have a lower energy density
than petrol, but requires a much richer fuel mixture. At the correct
fuel:air ratio, the engine produces more power than petrol. Methanol burns
at a different rate than petrol, and this needs to be taken into acount in
the engine design and tuning. It also can be used at higher compression
ratios.
Methanol is used in many classes of speedway and drag racing, as well as
Indy ("Champ") cars. A 500cc single cylinder speedway bike produces about
80 BHP running on methanol, while an alcohol fuelled dragster produces
around 2500-300 BHP from a supercharged 500 cubic inch v8.
