More to the point, Tony, where would you get the coke? The coke was made
from wandoo here (white gum) and cutting that timber these days is a no
no. There is a sensitivity in much of the Aussie population about people
cutting down trees. Or would you use coal with its increased pollution?
Not many choices.

I lived as an adult in the days of gas producers, and unless they made
giant strides in improving them I wouldn't want to be condemned to using
one.

PROCEDURE: I saw it many times during the war!!

1. Open the lid and Throw in a match to burn the gas remaining in the
chamber. Whoosh - Keep well back or you lose your hair and get a nice
sunburn.
2. Light the fire and wait till it gets up a glow.
3. Stow your bag of coke back in the boot (if you can open it past the
producer which is on the back bumper).
4. Get moving and when you come to a hill switch to petrol because the gas
won't pull the car up a hill of more than a dozen or so degrees.
5. Peer through the steering wheel to see where you are going because that
gadget on the back is darned heavy and the back of the car is dragging its
tail. Do you like your lights at night shining on the road or giving you a
good view of the tree tops? Readjust your lights to get over that.
6. Arrive at your destination and go and have a good wash to get rid of
the soot.

I guess these days there would be improvements but I can't see many people
going for them.

Better use LPG or LNG, we have plenty of the latter (or did have till
there was an explosion up north!!!! But that is a sore point here with a
Government which had no contingency plans for such a possibility and got
caught with their pants down!!)

By the way did you know gas producers were a West Australian development
during the war? Pedericks of Wagin WA built them.I knew the family.
Cheers,
Bob VK6BE.
