Yes Tony, the Chevs and some other American makes had vacuum tanks to feed
the carby. My second car was a Chev 6 1929, the first of the 6 cylinder
engines built by Chev. It had a vacuum tank. I don't know how the fuel was
pumped into the vacuum tank which was where you described, but I do knuw
that the updraught carburetter was fed from the vacuum tank by gravity.
This Chev was pretty old when I bought it (1948) and the actual fuel tank
had been removed for some reason by a previous owner. I got around that by
filling the vacuum tank with petrol every 20 miles or so until I could get
hold of a 12 gallon tank and install it in the vehicle. There was no fuel
pump. The original system worked by vacuum from the manifold as you said.
As the fuel line and tank had been removed at the same time I have no idea
what system was used to pump fuel from the tank to the vacuum tank. It had
been converted into a utility and so I merely installed the replacement
tank high on the tray at the back and bypassed the vacuum tank using
gravity to feed the carby.I used a dipstick to measure the amount of fuel
in the tank. This was immediately post war when cars were as scarce as
hen's teeth and many vehicles were on the road which normally would have
been rusting on a dump. We had no choice until new vehicles started to
come into the country again, and they were expensive. An English Ford
Anglia cost 400 pounds here which was nearly twice my year's salary as a
teacher. The equivalent today with teachers' salaries as they are now
would be about $100 000 for an 8 hp small car..
Cheers,
Bob VK6BE.
