I am assuming this happens when you go into graphics mode....
It could be, that your X server is programming your video card for a
video mode the display can't handle.
Often lower resolution modes are defined. If this is the case, you
could try cycling through them with the "CLTR-ALT-KEYPAD+" sequence.
It helps if NumLock is off when you do this.
Once you have a usable X picture, you should run the X configuration
utility in order to find the best resolution and refresh rate that
your monitor can deal with.
Make sure to hash out the offending mode line in the DISPLAY section
of your XF86Config file. The X status messages will tell you where the
X config file lives. E.g:
(==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/XF86Config"
