I had my tongue so far in cheek with that one you could mistake me for a
hamster! (;->)
Those 4-400As can be used grounded grid, but there's a TRICK to it. I
believe it involves a 10 resistor from the screen grid to the ground
point (bypassed of course) but it's been so darn long I forgot about it.
I know an expert on such things I can ask if you're really interested.
OF COURSE those 3-500Zs glow, if they didn't surely something's wrong.
(;->) I don't know about graphite anodes BECOMING brittle, it IS brittle
to begin with. How else could you snap that pencil in two when you've had
it up to THERE?
I can't see any reason to throttle back an Icom or any other rig, they
run BEST open full bore. Throttle one back and you're dealing with the
ALC circuit, you'll end up doing a clever balancing act when you derive
ALC from the amplifier.
That's exactly what happens when you switch to AM and at least with my
706-Mk2G the DSB overpowers the carrier so I have to switch the
compressor off. It tends to overmodulate with it on but what can you
expect from a transmitter designed for SSB and optimised for it?
The 4-400A was very popular in standard AM (MW) broadcast transmitters
and were usually driven by an 807 or 6146. Considering Continuous
Commercial Service (CCS vs ICAS) those drivers just loafed along and the
FPA took it all in stride at CCS ratings.
OOPS! Just noticed a typo above, make that "10K resistor".
