Hi Peter,

Oh dear me, you speak of Earth but you've been living in Canada too long 
and are probably out of touch with the Earthlings. (;->)

First and foremost, AM is alive and well (maybe not up there in The Great 
White North) so give a listen to the 75M window any evening or the 40M 
window before the broadcasters start moving in. When propagation was 
still good, the 10M window was BOOMING.

Secondly, SSB causes just as much RFI and audio rectification, only it 
sounds like some sci-fi monster invaded the stereo and it's LOUDER than 
what AM produces. You should see and hear the mess when 6M gets into the 
IF strip of a TV and blasts every channel all to hell, cable not 
withstanding. (;->)

Thirdly, the better SWL receivers have SSB and some even have syncronous 
detectors for the best selective fade free reception you ever heard. Then 
if you don't have one of those rather expensive jobs, switch to SSB and 
zero beat the carrier. Those receivers have SSB beause many SW broadcasts 
ARE SSB. Since you hadn't guessed, SWLs have kept up with our SSB and 
have been listening to us all along. Many Hams take note of this and 
welcome SWL cards right over the air. Well, maybe not in CANADA. (;->)

OK, now that this avid SWL of 40+ years standing has brought you up to 
speed, get your AM butt on some other bands besides Top Band! Maybe I'll 
work you on 6M or 2M AM if conditions are right...
