Nothing Like good old AM..(Advanced Modulation)
Alas its all but a memory. Andy says AM is no good for DX, then how do you
think we worked DX before SSB :-) On 160M, using kites and WX balloons in
the UK incredible distances were worked and I often worked W1BB(Stew) and
VO1FB (Doc) across the pond with an ef80/ef80/6bw6 10 watt line up on cw
and across the UK on AM using a pair of 6aq5's in pushpull class B zero
bias driven by a 12au7 modulator.
As for SSB in the mid 60's, I once fooled a net of US servicemen Hams on
80m They had GM5 calls and were located in Scotland. Using a converted
TCS8 with a pair of 807s in class A modulation (expensive on current!) I
called in on their net and it was not until I told them I was using AM and
they tuned in my carrier that they were aware of it!!
Wonder what ever happened to D R (Doc) Kelly GM5AIF?? He supplied me with
all the decrete parts for an SSB TX as per the 66 ARRL handbook.
As Bob VK6BE says, no AM in Western Australia for many years. As for 160m
allocation here, a slight breeze on the VFO dial and one is out of band
anyway. Mind you the 1.8 to 2.0mcs in the UK was often unsuable due to
"loran" taking up most of the band.
