An interesting observation which I think is the correct one. ....

I've just put mine through a couple of tests. When it is turned off, it
retains the time setting at that point. When it is turned on again, it
continues on from that point, with no knowledge of what has passed in the
intervening period.

Which, I guess is why you can buy a RTC module/kit as an option. Page
111 of the manual tells all ;-)

This has never been a real issue for me as I have always put a command in
my Winpack startup.txt to set the TNC clock to the same value as the PC.
Careful perusal of both the Winpack and KPC-3 manuals will tell you how to
do it if you aren't sure.

What I really would like to know is the sure fire way to get the KPC-3 out
of GPS mode on a consistent basis. GPS mode essentially puts the device
in transparent mode for which the required exit ceremony involves sending
three <CTL> C's in accordance with the CMDTIME parameter. It works first
time about one go in five (on a good day).

Most times it takes a combination of things like exiting the terminal
program, and/or turning off the KPC-3 and then on again. Several times I
feared I had lost the thing for good and was threatening to do a dreaded
hard reset, but then without any obvious reason, it returns to Command
mode without a hint of apology. I've yet to crack a reliable, sure fire,
first time procedure.

I'm sure there's a random number generator in there somewhere :-|
