The battery is intended to keep both the clock running and retain the
settings of the KPC while the power is off. If the time is not being
retained, I wonder if the settings are also being lost? Is it retaining
your callsign?
If it is loosing both, recheck the battery is good and also inserted the
correct way. I seem to remember there is a link on the PCB which
disconnects the battery and sets the TNC back to defaults, could this
link be in the wrong position?
