Gi Gordon and all,

OOPS, pardon my clumsy finger. Good to see that someone besides myself
and a small circle of friends rely on the best filter of all, the one
between your ears! Notice the simple word "filter" since that was a very
broad statement, intentionally so.

BTW, don't let our dirty little secret be known to the general public or
the worker bees in the cube farm, they're the ones who keep us in
business. If it weren't for dumb system administrators and even dumber
users who download everything in sight and open every e-mail that looks
enticing we would be out of a job.

Now I reiterate, if you want to be spam free use an ISP that is! Forget
about the "big boys" who supply you with proprietary software with all
those useless bells and whistles, they're there for a reason. Do I really
have to tell you why? Then there's the "freebies" who have to pay for the
mail service even if they don't charge you. Take one guess how they do it!

Now I put this in a separate paragraph so it stands out, check with a
potential ISP and find out how their server is configured. If they can't
or won't tell you or you get the telephone robot runaround, write them
off as a spam server, move on. I'll give you a clue, I don't use ANY sort
of spam killer on my primary account, don't need one. Take one guess why!

Oh, before I go here's a starting point for those plagued by spam and are
looking for a good server. Check out the various Internet security sites
and discussion groups (PROFESSIONAL ones, not the idiots blathering
nonsense) and look for ones concerning spam and how to deal with it. Some
of these sites have a ratings section that give complete information on
the servers and list them according to the volume of spam. Hmmm, you
should read some of the comments about the worst ones, big HI. Not only
will you learn about the spam servers and which are the good ones but
you'll learn much about their security as well. Oh, don't think that the
ones that block ports and stuff are good, you DON'T want that! I can't go
into detail here, I'm not writing a book, merely suggesting you LEARN
about what's on the other end of your modem connection be it telco line,
ADSL or cable.

Bottome line here is there's a much bigger computer out there than the
one in here so it pays to learn what's out there too. You may have your
PC armor plated up the wazoo, but it's only as good as the one it's
talking to!
